Cleveland Browns eye trade options for Jerome Ford amid early-season struggles

The Cleveland Browns are navigating a challenging start to their season, sitting at 0-2, and their running game has struggled significantly. As they assess their roster, the possibility of trading Jerome Ford, their longest-tenured running back, has emerged as a potential move as competition heats up in the backfield.

Changing dynamics in the backfield

Jerome Ford, a fourth-year running back from the University of Cincinnati, has found himself in a crowded and youthful backfield. With three rookie running backs emerging as promising prospects, Ford’s role is becoming less certain. Despite showing flashes of potential, he faces the reality that the ceiling for these younger players appears considerably higher.

Ford was drafted in the fifth round as the 156th overall pick in 2022. Over his four years with the Browns, he has accumulated 1,429 rushing yards and seven touchdowns. Additionally, he has demonstrated versatility with 87 receptions for 564 yards and five scores. Last season, he contributed 564 rushing yards and three touchdowns, averaging just 40.4 yards per game.

The competition heats up

In the backdrop of Ford’s challenges, the Browns also have a pressing need to cultivate a robust and youthful backfield. With the likes of Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt having led the charge in previous seasons, Ford’s opportunities have been limited. As the team evaluates its future, the focus on younger talent to complement their established stars becomes increasingly vital.

The Cleveland Browns are not alone in seeking to optimize their roster. Other teams, including the Arizona Cardinals, are also exploring options to bolster their running game. With James Conner leading their backfield at 30 years old, the Cardinals are keen on developing younger players to ensure sustainable success.

A shifting landscape

As the Browns continue to seek solutions during this early-season slump, trading Ford could align with their long-term strategy. While he possesses talent and experience, the emergence of newer players may lead the front office to consider a deal that benefits both parties.

Ford’s journey in Cleveland has been marked by resilience and determination, but the current roster dynamics may push him toward a fresh start elsewhere. As the Browns look to rebuild and refocus, every option, including a potential trade for Ford, remains on the table as they navigate the complexities of the NFL landscape.
