The Cleveland Browns are on the cusp of a critical offseason, grappling with a significant decision regarding their head coaching position. Current head coach Kevin Stefanski appears to be on the verge of parting ways with the organization, creating a vacancy that the team hopes will help them finally turn the corner. Filling this position will be no easy feat, but the right candidate may already be within the organization.
Jim Schwartz emerges as a leading candidate
Since joining the Browns in 2023, defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz has transformed the team’s defense into one of the best in the league. Schwartz has publicly expressed interest in stepping into a head coaching role if the opportunity arises. “I’d certainly consider it,” he stated. “I think in any business you aspire to the top. And I’m no different than other people in that way.”
This season, the Browns have showcased the league’s second-best defense, allowing an average of just 278.2 yards per game. Schwartz’s strategic approach has led to standout performances from key players, including Myles Garrett, who has tallied 22 sacks, just half a sack shy of the NFL record with one game remaining in the season. Garrett is a frontrunner for the Defensive Player of the Year award, while rookie linebacker Carson Schwesinger leads all rookies in tackles and is a favorite for the Defensive Rookie of the Year.
Defensive strengths and offensive struggles
The Browns’ defensive unit ranks among the top 10 in both rushing and passing yards allowed and is third in total sacks. They have also committed the fourth fewest penalties on defense. However, one area where the defense has struggled is in total points allowed, where they sit in the middle of the pack. A significant factor contributing to this issue has been the offense’s tendency to put the defense in challenging situations, often leading to points being surrendered.
Despite these challenges, the Browns have remained competitive throughout the season, thanks in large part to Schwartz’s defensive schemes. If the organization fails to at least interview Schwartz for the head coaching position, it would be a disservice to his accomplishments.
Schwartz’s coaching legacy and potential paths forward
Schwartz’s previous stint as a head coach with the Detroit Lions was marked by limited success, as he guided the team to the playoffs just once over five seasons, with a record below .500 in the rest. However, the Lions have been synonymous with dysfunction, and the lack of success cannot solely be attributed to Schwartz’s tenure. Since then, he has proven his worth as a coordinator, playing a key role in the Philadelphia Eagles’ Super Bowl LII victory and earning the Assistant Coach of the Year award in 2023 with the Browns.
Should the Browns decide to move on from Stefanski, it seems highly probable that Schwartz will either ascend to the head coaching role or exit the organization. Given his track record, other franchises will undoubtedly pursue him as a coordinator or head coach.

In addition to Schwartz, the Browns may consider a range of candidates for the head coaching position, including offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel, and UNC head coach Bill Belichick.
