However, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero provided a more reassuring outlook on Friday morning, suggesting that within the 49ers organization, there isn’t a sense of impending alarm regarding McCaffrey’s condition.
“I do not get the sense based on the conversations I’ve had so far that there are alarm bells going off about Christian McCaffrey at this point,” Pelissero reported. His words reflect a belief that while caution is warranted, there is no immediate cause for concern.
Precautionary Measures
Pelissero emphasized the importance of taking precautions with a player of McCaffrey’s caliber, particularly considering his history. “If there is any player you are going to take precautions with if he feels something in practice, it’s the guy who’s arguably your best player and missed most of last season because of a variety of different elements,” he noted.
The unpredictable nature of calf injuries was also highlighted, as they can sometimes signal more serious issues like Achilles injuries. McCaffrey himself faced Achilles-related challenges last year. “We also know that calf injuries can be tricky,” Pelissero added. “At times they are precursors to Achilles injuries. Again, I do not get the sense that this is DEFCON 1.”
