Chiefs aim to revive rushing attack against Ravens as Mahomes searches for offensive balance

The Kansas City Chiefs’ offense has been a challenging spectacle to observe as they navigate the opening weeks of the season. With Patrick Mahomes leading the charge, the team finds itself at a disappointing 1-2 record, and the struggle to establish a consistent rushing attack has been glaring. As they gear up to face the Baltimore Ravens, this matchup is shaping up to be a critical moment for the Chiefs—a true “gotta have it” game.

A Glimmer of Hope

Despite the overall struggles, there was a flicker of optimism in the Chiefs’ second half during their 22-9 victory over the New York Giants. Mahomes, despite slipping to the fourth spot in recent quarterback rankings, continues to shoulder the offensive load. Nick Shook noted that Mahomes’ drop in rank was largely due to the impressive performances of others, rather than any decline in his abilities. “Patrick Mahomes continues to carry Kansas City’s offense,” Shook observed, highlighting the importance of Mahomes’ role amid the team’s challenges.

In a noteworthy development, the Chiefs finally found a new leading rusher during Week 3—an encouraging sign that may signal a shift in their offensive dynamics.

Rushing Challenges Ahead

Looking ahead to their clash with the Ravens, the Chiefs must address their rushing woes. Baltimore’s defense has allowed over 100 rushing yards in each of its first three games, opening the door for the Kansas City ground game to make an impact. However, the Chiefs haven’t been able to capitalize fully on these opportunities.

Isiah Pacheco and Kareem Hunt have struggled to generate significant yardage, with Pacheco managing just 92 yards and Hunt contributing 81 yards across the first three games. This lack of production raises questions—will this be the turning point for the Chiefs’ rushing attack? The Ravens recently surrendered over 200 yards on the ground to the Detroit Lions, further hinting at vulnerabilities that Kansas City could exploit.

The Need for Balance

The reliance on Mahomes alone is unsustainable. A balanced offense, particularly one that can effectively utilize the run game, is essential for success. Currently, neither Pacheco nor Hunt is averaging more than eight rushing attempts per game, a statistic that underscores the urgent need for improvement.

Mahomes can only do so much without a reliable running game to complement his efforts. The Chiefs are hoping that the encouraging signs from last week’s game will translate into a more effective performance against the Ravens.

As kickoff approaches, the Chiefs are acutely aware of the stakes involved. They must find a way to establish their rushing attack, allowing Mahomes to operate with the support he desperately needs. The outcome of this matchup could very well set the tone for the remainder of their season.
