Chicago Bears consider adding massive lineman Zach Banner for depth
The Chicago Bears recently hosted an intriguing workout featuring Zach Banner, a towering figure at 6-foot-8 and weighing in at 358 pounds. This tryout stood out in the Bears’ transaction report, showcasing the team’s exploration of potential reinforcements for their offensive line.
A Look at Banner’s Journey
Drafted in the fourth round by the Indianapolis Colts in 2017 out of USC, Banner’s NFL journey has been anything but straightforward. Although he never suited up for the Colts, he made his debut with the Cleveland Browns, playing eight games during his rookie season. Following a missed year in 2018, he joined the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2019, where he participated in 14 games, starting one of them.
Banner continued to contribute for Pittsburgh, starting one game in 2020 and appearing in seven additional contests during the 2021 season. Since then, he has been relatively quiet in the league, most recently playing in the United Football League for the Houston Roughnecks this past spring.
Bears’ Offensive Line Plans
While the Bears have not yet signed Banner, his workout indicates they are considering options to bolster their existing offensive line depth. The team’s current projected starters for Week 1, according to depth chart resource Ourlads, include:
LT Braxton Jones
LG Joe Thuney
C Drew Dalman
RG Jonah Jackson
RT Darnell Wright
In addition to these five starters, the Bears also have another five offensive linemen on their 53-man roster, showcasing a commitment to depth and versatility along the line.
Potential for an NFL Return
Banner’s recent workout with the Bears may signal renewed interest in his skills, either from Chicago or elsewhere. With his impressive size and previous experience in the league, he remains a player to watch as teams finalize their rosters ahead of the upcoming season.
As the Bears assess their options, the prospect of adding a player like Banner could add an intriguing dynamic to their offensive line strategy.
