Chargers’ season spirals as offensive line crisis threatens Justin Herbert’s survival

Chargers’ Season on the Brink as Offensive Line Crisis Threatens Justin Herbert’s Future

The Los Angeles Chargers find themselves in a precarious situation as their promising season begins to unravel. After a strong 3-0 start, all against AFC West rivals, the team has stumbled to a 4-3 record as they head into Week 8. The question looms: is it time for the Chargers to panic? While it may not be panic mode just yet, the clock is ticking.

Injury Woes Plague the Chargers

The primary culprit behind the Chargers’ downward spiral has been injuries, particularly along the offensive line. Key players have fallen victim to various ailments, disrupting the team’s offensive rhythm. The backfield is in disarray as well, with Najee Harris nursing an Achilles injury and Omarion Hampton sidelined with an ankle issue. This has left quarterback Justin Herbert scrambling for safety week after week.

In the recent Week 7 loss to the Indianapolis Colts, Herbert faced an alarming amount of pressure—57% of his dropbacks resulted in him being pressured, and he was hit a staggering 15 times. Such stats highlight the dire need for improvement on the offensive front.

Calls for a Trade

ESPN analyst Dan Graziano weighed in on the situation, stating that acquiring an offensive lineman is not merely an overreaction but a necessity. “Acquiring a quality offensive lineman during the season is easier said than done, but the Chargers need to try,” he noted. With promising player Alt possibly returning soon, it still may not be enough to compensate for the loss of Rashawn Slater, who is out for the season. Depth on the offensive line is a crucial need if the Chargers hope to bolster Herbert’s protection.

The season started with excitement as the Chargers secured three consecutive division victories. However, they now find themselves tied for second place in the competitive AFC West, a stark contrast to their earlier momentum.

Challenges Ahead

The challenges facing the Chargers extend beyond the immediate need for offensive line reinforcements. Graziano pointed out a significant issue in the league: there’s a shortage of talented offensive linemen, and teams are often reluctant to part ways with their protectors. The Chargers did manage to add Austin Deculus before the start of the season, but his role has predominantly been that of a depth piece rather than a game-changer.

Finding solutions to their offensive line woes is imperative for the Chargers. As they head into the next phase of the season, the urgency to stabilize the offensive front and protect Herbert has never been greater. The team must navigate this critical juncture wisely if they want to turn their season around and protect their franchise quarterback.
