Cedric Gray’s rise from injured reserve to starting linebacker sparks excitement for Titans’ clash with Broncos

Cedric Gray’s Journey to Starting Linebacker Energizes Titans Ahead of Broncos Showdown

The Tennessee Titans have made a pivotal decision just ahead of their season opener against the Denver Broncos, naming Cedric Gray as the starting linebacker. The announcement follows a competitive training camp where Gray emerged victorious in a close contest against fellow second-year player James Williams Sr.

Gray Takes the Lead

Titans head coach Brian Callahan shed light on the decision, praising Gray’s performance during camp. “Cedric showed up when it was time to play football,” Callahan stated. He acknowledged that while Williams had a strong camp, it was Gray’s physicality and tenacity that ultimately secured him the starting spot. “It wasn’t anything that James didn’t do, it was what Ced did. He showed up, played physical, and played hard. … Both those guys are really going to be counted on this season in roles.”

Overcoming Adversity

Gray, a fourth-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft from North Carolina, faced significant challenges during his rookie season. Much of his year was spent on injured reserve due to a nerve-related shoulder injury. Despite this setback, he managed to participate in the final seven games of the season, albeit primarily in a limited capacity. In a crucial moment against the Indianapolis Colts, following an injury to incumbent starter Kenneth Murray Jr., Gray seized the opportunity and led the team with 15 tackles in that game.

A Competitive Edge

Throughout training camp, Gray initially found himself behind Williams on the depth chart. However, his recent improvements and consistent performances over the past few weeks have solidified his position as a starter. As the Titans prepare to face the Broncos, there remains the possibility of adjustments should Gray struggle early in the season. Williams, who transitioned from safety during his college days at Miami, is still gaining experience at the linebacker position and could be a viable alternative if needed.

Kickoff Approaches

The Titans will have the chance to assess their decision as they travel to Colorado for their season opener against the Broncos. Kickoff is set for Sunday at 3:05 p.m. CT, with fans able to catch the action on CBS or stream it via Paramount Plus. As anticipation builds, the Titans organization is poised to see how Gray’s rise impacts the team’s performance in the weeks to come.
