Cardinals’ Defensive Line Takes a Hit with Injuries to Simon and Blount

The Arizona Cardinals are facing a significant setback as they navigate their Week 1 contest against the New Orleans Saints. Both linebacker Cody Simon and safety Joey Blount have been ruled out for the remainder of the game due to concussions, as reported during the CBS broadcast. This news comes after both players were injured during a kickoff coverage play, following a late score by the Cardinals with just 28 seconds left in the first half.

Impact on the Defensive Line

The absence of Simon and Blount represents a substantial loss for Arizona’s defensive depth and special teams. Simon, a fourth-round pick from Ohio State, was vying for a starting position in training camp before losing out to veteran Akeem Davis-Gaither. Simon has emphasized his instincts and communication skills as key strengths, stating, “As a linebacker, you need to have great instincts. Being a great leader and communicator is vital for a good defense. If your middle linebacker can have that, you can have a good middle linebacker.”

Blount, who has been recognized as a team captain, has carved out a reputation as a key rotational player over the past few seasons. His versatility has earned him the respect of both teammates and coaches. Both players were part of the Cardinals’ initial 53-man roster, and their absence will be felt on the field.

Owen Pappoe is expected to step in for Simon, while Kitan Crawford will likely assume Blount’s responsibilities. The team will now need to rely on these players to fill the gaps left by the injured duo.

Head Coach’s Perspective on the Saints

Looking ahead to their matchup with the Saints, head coach Jonathan Gannon shared his thoughts on the formidable challenge posed by New Orleans and head coach Kellen Moore. Gannon remarked, “I have a high opinion of Kellen. He’s always had really good offenses. It makes it really hard on a defense how he calls the game. The pace that he plays with is hard to defend. It puts you on your heels.”

Gannon recognizes the difficulty of facing Moore’s schemes, which have proven challenging for defenses across the league. He acknowledged that the Cardinals will need to be well-prepared to counter the Saints’ creative offensive strategies.

Excitement for the Game

Despite the injuries and the tough matchup ahead, Gannon expressed enthusiasm for the game. “It’s fun. I always say in coaching, the best part of the job is right now,” he said. “Games are fun, man. You get to get measured. You see the week of prep, how well did you do it, and then you get to learn from it and move on. Whether you win or lose, you have to learn from that and move on. This is the fun part. Juices will be flowing.”

As the Cardinals face the Saints, they’ll need to adapt quickly to the challenges presented by the absence of Simon and Blount, while also preparing for one of the league’s more creative offensive minds in Moore. The outcome of this matchup could hinge on how well these adjustments are made.
