Buffalo’s hidden gem: rookie tight end Jackson Hawes shines with top PFF rating, dazzling in early NFL season

Date:

Buffalo’s Rising Star

As the NFL season unfolds, one player is making headlines and catching the attention of fans and analysts alike. Surprisingly, this standout rookie is none other than Buffalo Bills tight end Jackson Hawes.

Early Impressions

Three weeks into the season, Hawes has emerged as the top-rated rookie in the league, boasting an impressive Pro Football Focus (PFF) rating of 91.8. This performance not only ranks him above his fellow newcomers but also places him in a position of significance on a team expected to contend.

In a thrilling matchup on Thursday Night Football during Week 3, Hawes showcased his talents by scoring his first NFL touchdown. The moment came as he deftly found space in the end zone, snagging a backhanded pass from quarterback Josh Allen. This critical play highlighted Hawes’ ability to read the game and capitalize on opportunities.

PFF Analysis

Pro Football Focus provided a detailed breakdown of Hawes’ performance against the Miami Dolphins. He recorded a solid overall grade of 75.8, significantly bolstered by his touchdown catch—a five-yard shovel pass that skillfully navigated a narrow gap between two defenders.

Moreover, Hawes excelled in pass protection, earning a stellar 76.2 grade, which ranks as the second-best in the game. However, his run-blocking performance saw some hiccups, reflected in a 62.0 grade due to three negative plays, marking his first such missteps of the season.

Despite this, Hawes has maintained a remarkable 88.2 receiving grade overall, catching all three of his targets for a total of 39 yards. His effectiveness extends beyond receiving, as he ranks seventh among tight ends in run-blocking with a score of 78.6, and he also finds himself within the top 10 for pass blocking with a 77.4 rating.

A Defensive Draft Strategy

It’s noteworthy that the Bills focused heavily on bolstering their defense during the draft, making Hawes’ emergence as a key offensive player even more remarkable. While the team fortified its defensive lineup, Hawes has quietly stepped into a pivotal role, proving that he can be a reliable target and blocker for an offense that features high-profile talents.

With the early success he has shown, Jackson Hawes is not just a hidden gem; he is quickly becoming a vital asset for the Buffalo Bills. As the season progresses, all eyes will be on him to see how he continues to develop and contribute to the team’s ambitions.
