Buffalo Bills stay unbeaten but defense stumbles as Greg Rousseau faces $80M challenge after win over Dolphins

Buffalo Bills maintain perfect record despite defensive struggles

The Buffalo Bills have secured a 3-0 start to their season after a 31-21 victory over the Miami Dolphins on Thursday Night Football. While the win bolsters their record, it also highlighted some defensive vulnerabilities that the team will need to address moving forward.

Defensive Challenges Against the Dolphins

The Bills’ defense faced significant challenges, particularly on third downs, where the Dolphins converted an impressive 10 of 15 attempts. This inability to halt drives proved costly, as Miami consistently found ways to exploit gaps in Buffalo’s defense. The pressure on quarterback Tua Tagovailoa was minimal, with defensive end Greg Rousseau struggling to make an impact. Rousseau concluded the game with just one tackle, failing to register any sacks or quarterback hits, a stark contrast to the expectations set by his recent contract extension.

A Call to Action for Rousseau

Head coach Sean McDermott expressed the need for Rousseau to elevate his performance in the games ahead. “Greg has had some good reps,” McDermott noted. “And then there’s some other things that he would tell you he wanted to do better in the first three games. Going forward, we are gonna need that.” The Bills rewarded Rousseau with a significant four-year, $80 million extension this past offseason, underscoring the high hopes the franchise has for him. With such a lucrative contract, expectations are soaring, and Rousseau’s performance will need to match that investment.

Continued Success from Josh Allen

Despite the defensive shortcomings, quarterback Josh Allen showcased his prowess yet again. His performance not only led the team to victory but also allowed him to chase down records, including breaking a touchdown record previously held by Patrick Mahomes. Allen’s ability to find success in challenging moments remains a vital component of the Bills’ strategy this season.

The Bills will need to refine their defensive approach as they move deeper into the season. With their unbeaten record on the line, every game is critical, and addressing these defensive lapses will be essential for maintaining their momentum.
