Buffalo Bills shake up roster with Darnell Savage acquisition
The Buffalo Bills have turned a challenging situation into an opportunity, showcasing their ability to adapt amid roster changes. Initially, the team aimed to bolster their defense by acquiring cornerback Darius Slay, only to face an unexpected twist when Slay chose not to report to Buffalo. This decision forced the Bills to place the veteran on the reserve/did not report list, allowing them to retain his rights while simultaneously creating space for other players.
Roster adjustments lead to new acquisition
In a swift move, the Bills claimed former first-round draft pick Darnell Savage off waivers from the Washington Commanders, filling the vacancy left by Slay. Unlike Slay, Savage expressed enthusiasm about joining the Bills, and head coach Sean McDermott noted the safety’s potential to contribute meaningfully as the season progresses.
Savage, 28, has been in game shape, having participated in ten combined games this season with both the Commanders and the Jacksonville Jaguars. His most recent performance occurred on November 16, where he played 26 snaps on offense and contributed five on special teams against the Miami Dolphins.
Addressing safety depth amid injuries
With key players Damar Hamlin and Taylor Rapp on Injured Reserve for the foreseeable future, the Bills are in dire need of experienced safety depth behind starters Jordan Poyer and Cole Bishop. Although Savage’s time with the team has been brief—just two days before their matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals—his presence is expected to add valuable depth to the defensive backfield.
McDermott highlighted the importance of integrating Savage into the team’s system, saying, “Had a brief conversation with him this morning. Like any player this time of year, you’re trying to see what you can add to help our football team. Learning is gonna take some time.”
Versatile skill set and past interest
Savage’s versatility could be an asset during the critical stretch run of the season. McDermott mentioned the various roles Savage could fill: “Maybe he plays some safety. Maybe he plays some nickel. Maybe some special teams. We’ll just take it one day at a time.”
The Bills have had their sights set on Savage for years. Selected 21st overall by the Green Bay Packers in the 2019 NFL Draft, his trajectory through the league has kept him on the Bills’ radar. McDermott remarked, “He’s a guy we’ve had our eye on going back to even the draft process, and then when he left Green Bay for Jacksonville, then Jacksonville to Washington the last couple of months, I believe it was.”
Before joining the Bills, Savage amassed 95 career appearances, with 82 of those being starts. He had signed a lucrative free-agent contract with the Jaguars in 2024, further showcasing his value in the league.
As the Bills navigate the remainder of the season, Savage’s ability to adapt and contribute will be crucial, especially in light of the team’s current injury struggles. The acquisition of Savage may just be the strategic move the Bills need as they look to solidify their playoff aspirations.
