Buffalo Bills punt to victory as Cameron Johnston secures starting role after competitive tryouts

Bills Hold Punting Competition and Welcome Defensive Tryouts

On Tuesday, the Buffalo Bills hosted a notable punting competition at their training facility, One Bills Drive, while also bringing in six defensive players for tryouts. The day proved pivotal for Cameron Johnston, who appears to have secured the starting punter position amidst fierce competition.

Johnston Triumphs in Punting Challenge

Cameron Johnston, a former standout at Ohio State, was one of several punters vying for the role. He faced off against Matthew Hayball and Ryan Stonehouse during the tryouts. Following an impressive performance, Johnston was signed to the Bills’ 53-man roster, positioning him as the team’s primary punter moving forward.

In a tactical move reflecting the team’s commitment to improvement, the Bills decided to part ways with former punter Brad Robbins. Robbins had struggled significantly, finishing at the bottom of the league in expected points added (EPA) during Week 1. Despite initially winning the punting job over Jake Camarda based on his spring performance, Robbins’ inconsistent play ultimately led to his release.

Johnston’s Journey to Buffalo

Before joining the Bills, Johnston had a brief stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers, where he appeared in just one game during the 2024 season. He recorded two punts, averaging 37.5 net yards, which didn’t showcase his full potential. With eight years of professional experience under his belt, Johnston boasts an impressive career average of 42.2 net yards per punt. His previous tenures with the Philadelphia Eagles and Houston Texans have prepared him for this new opportunity in Buffalo.

As the Bills look to solidify their special teams unit, Johnston’s experience and performance during the tryouts will be crucial as they head into the upcoming season. With only one punter now on the roster, the team’s focus shifts to ensuring that Johnston can deliver consistent and effective play when called upon.
