Buffalo Bills tackle crisis ahead of key matchup with Steelers
As the Buffalo Bills prepare to face the formidable Pittsburgh Steelers, they must contend with a significant setback. The team has ruled out both of their starting offensive tackles, Dion Dawkins and Spencer Brown, for the crucial road game on November 30. This development places immense pressure on the Bills’ offensive line, which will need to adapt quickly to protect quarterback Josh Allen against a relentless Steelers defensive front, led by the formidable TJ Watt.
Depth in the offensive line
With Dawkins and Brown sidelined, the Bills find themselves in a challenging position. Fortunately, they have several options to fill these critical roles. Ryan Van Demark, Alec Anderson, and sixth-round rookie Chase Lundt are all available as tackles on Buffalo’s 53-man roster. Additionally, Tylan Grable, a 2024 sixth-round draft pick, is expected to return from Injured Reserve and could also contribute.
Ryan Van Demark steps up
Ryan Van Demark has emerged as a reliable backup for the Bills, having gained valuable experience already this season. The University of Connecticut product started in place of Spencer Brown during Week 4 and showcased his versatility by stepping in for Dion Dawkins against the Houston Texans. In that game, he filled in at left tackle for a brief stint before taking over at right tackle for the remainder of the contest.
It’s anticipated that Van Demark will assume the starting left tackle position against the Steelers. His ability to perform under pressure has been demonstrated in previous games, including a standout performance against the Kansas City Chiefs during the 2024 regular season. Van Demark’s initial exposure to NFL action came during the 2023 regular season finale against the Miami Dolphins, where he played a pivotal role in securing the AFC East title for the Bills.
Alec Anderson’s versatility
Alec Anderson, though listed as a tackle, has played a multifaceted role on the offensive line. Most of his game time has been spent on the interior or as an additional sixth offensive lineman. He made his mark by starting at left guard during the 2024 regular season finale. Standing at 6-foot-5, Anderson is likely to step into the starting right tackle position in Week 13.
Despite the Bills opting for a lighter personnel strategy this season, Anderson has been active for all 11 games thus far. Last season, he participated in 27 percent of the offensive snaps, indicating his readiness to contribute when called upon.
With both Dawkins and Brown out of action, the Bills’ offensive line faces a critical test. The ability of Van Demark, Anderson, and potentially Lundt to rise to the occasion will be crucial as the Bills strive to maintain their competitive edge against the Steelers in this pivotal matchup.
