Buffalo Bills eye Ohio State’s Sonny Styles as next defensive powerhouse in 2026 NFL mock draft projection

The Buffalo Bills are making headlines as they look ahead to the 2026 NFL Draft, with projections suggesting a keen interest in bolstering their defense. After a strong start to the current season, the Bills find themselves at the top of the AFC East, showcasing a roster rich in talent and depth. This success is a testament to the strategic vision of general manager Brandon Beane and head coach Sean McDermott, whose ability to draft and develop players has kept the franchise competitive year after year.

A Promising Future

In a recent mock draft from CBS Sports, analyst Mike Renner has the Bills selecting linebacker Sonny Styles from Ohio State with their first-round pick, 31st overall. Renner draws comparisons between Styles and former Bill Tremaine Edmunds, noting that Styles possesses the physical attributes and speed necessary to excel in the NFL.

“Styles is Sean McDermott’s next Tremaine Edmunds: a jumbo athlete at linebacker who can run faster than any tight end he’ll be asked to guard. He’s a former safety who looks much improved in only his second season at the position,” Renner stated.

Styles’ Impact on the Defense

Standing at an impressive 6-foot-5 and weighing 243 pounds, Styles boasts a formidable presence on the field. His production at Ohio State has been noteworthy; in the 2024 season, he recorded 100 tackles and six sacks, demonstrating his playmaking ability and versatility. The Bills could greatly benefit from his skills, especially as they look to replace Matt Milano, who has faced ongoing durability issues.

However, the decision to draft a linebacker in the first round may hinge on the performance of Maxwell Hairston, currently in contention for a starting cornerback role. If Hairston proves himself capable, it could allow the Bills to focus on strengthening their linebacker corps with Styles. If not, the team may need to prioritize bolstering their secondary instead.

The Road Ahead for the Bills

As the season progresses, the Bills are poised to continue their pursuit of excellence. With a solid foundation and strategic foresight, the potential addition of Sonny Styles could pave the way for a new era of defensive prowess in Buffalo. The excitement surrounding this prospect reflects the franchise’s commitment to maintaining its competitive edge in the NFL, ensuring that they remain a formidable force in the league for years to come.
