Buffalo Bills eye Cowboys’ first-round bust Mazi Smith to bolster injury-plagued defensive line in strategic trade move

Buffalo Bills consider strategic trade for Mazi Smith to fortify struggling defensive line

In a season marred by injuries, the Buffalo Bills are actively exploring ways to strengthen their defensive line. Recent analysis suggests that the Bills could target Mazi Smith, a defensive lineman for the Dallas Cowboys who has yet to live up to expectations since being drafted in the first round.

Injury Struggles for the Bills

The Bills’ defensive line has faced significant setbacks early in the season. Key player Ed Oliver has been sidelined for the last two games, leaving his status uncertain as they head into Week 4. The team also suffered the loss of DeWayne Carter for the entire season, while Larry Ogunjobi will be unavailable until Week 8 due to a six-game suspension, coinciding with the Bills’ bye week in Week 7.

With these challenges, the Bills find themselves in a precarious situation and are in dire need of reinforcement. Analyst Kristopher Knox from Bleacher Report highlights that the team could benefit from pursuing Smith, who stands at 6’3″ and weighs 337 pounds. As a 24-year-old, he represents a potential investment for teams looking for a developmental interior defender.

Mazi Smith’s Underwhelming Career

Since being selected in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Smith’s tenure in the league has been disappointing. Following two lackluster seasons, he was listed as a healthy scratch for the first two games of the current season, raising questions about his future with the Cowboys. Knox notes that if Dallas isn’t committed to his development, they might be inclined to part with him for any semblance of return.

Despite Smith’s first-round pedigree, Knox suggests that the Cowboys might only receive a sixth-round pick in 2026 for him—an indication of how far his stock has fallen. This perspective may seem harsh, but it reflects the realities of Smith’s performance thus far in his career.

The Bills’ Urgency for Reinforcements

As the Bills contemplate this potential trade, the urgency to bolster their defensive line is palpable. With injuries depleting their ranks, the acquisition of a player like Smith—despite his struggles—could provide valuable depth and a chance for a fresh start in a new environment.

For the Bills, the focus now shifts to whether they can successfully negotiate a deal that could help revitalize their defensive front while simultaneously allowing Smith to unlock his potential away from the Cowboys.
