Browns Poised to Play Spoiler as Steelers Face Metcalf’s Suspension
Even in a challenging season, there’s a unique thrill in derailing a rival’s postseason aspirations. The Cleveland Browns find themselves in a position to do just that against the Pittsburgh Steelers next week, especially now that the Steelers have lost a critical offensive weapon.
Metcalf’s Suspension Shakes Up Steelers’ Offense
In Pittsburgh’s recent clash with the Detroit Lions, star wide receiver DK Metcalf was involved in an unsettling incident, where he engaged in a physical confrontation with a fan, culminating in a punch thrown before he walked away. Following a review, the NFL handed Metcalf a two-game suspension for conduct detrimental to the league, which effectively sidelines him for the remainder of the regular season. Although Metcalf has the option to appeal this ruling, it’s unlikely he will be reinstated in time for the pivotal matchup against the Browns.
In his first season with the Steelers, Metcalf has made a significant impact, racking up 59 receptions for 850 yards and six touchdowns. His absence creates a substantial gap in Pittsburgh’s offense that the Browns will look to exploit.
Browns’ Secondary Looking to Capitalize
This suspension comes at a fortuitous time for the Browns, who have been grappling with injuries within their secondary. Cornerback Denzel Ward has been sidelined for the last two games, pushing nickel corner Myles Harden and recent addition Sam Webb into more prominent roles. Unfortunately for Cleveland, this has allowed opposing quarterbacks to target these less experienced defenders instead of throwing towards established talents like Tyson Campbell or the team’s safeties. With Ward in the lineup, quarterbacks faced tougher decisions, but now Cleveland’s defense may see a slight reprieve.
Compounding the Steelers’ woes, their wide receiver corps appears to be in disarray, with Calvin Austin listed as questionable due to injury after missing last week’s game. This leaves quarterback Aaron Rodgers with a limited arsenal, featuring Scotty Miller, Adam Thielen, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, and rookie Roman Wilson as his primary targets. A weakened passing game could bolster Myles Garrett’s quest for the NFL’s single-season sack record, provided the defense can contain the Steelers’ ground attack.
Challenges Ahead for Both Sides
If the Steelers’ wideouts struggle to create separation, Garrett may find opportunities to pressure Rodgers, potentially leading to the sack he needs to reach the record. Yet, if Jaylen Warren can dominate Cleveland’s run defense as many teams have done recently, the Steelers could opt for a ground-heavy strategy, mitigating the need for passing altogether.
Should the Browns pull off an upset and the Baltimore Ravens defeat the Green Bay Packers, the division race could remain wide open, leaving the Steelers with a chance to miss the playoffs as the final week approaches. With Metcalf out of the equation, the odds of a Browns victory have undoubtedly improved, and they are poised to seize the moment.
