Browns eye LSU’s Garrett Nussmeier as potential franchise QB

The Cleveland Browns are in a crucial phase as they assess their quarterback options for the future. Currently, Joe Flacco is at the helm to start the season, but as the team navigates through the early stages, they need to evaluate their younger quarterbacks, Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel. This evaluation will be vital in determining whether the Browns should pursue a new signal-caller in the 2026 NFL Draft.

Shifting Focus to Nussmeier

Pro Football & Sports Network’s James Fragoza has provided a thought-provoking perspective on the Browns’ potential direction. He suggests that the team may abandon both Sanders and Gabriel in favor of LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier, projecting him as the No. 3 overall pick in the upcoming draft. Fragoza argues that the Saints opted for safety with their top pick, but the Browns must take bold steps to secure the face of their franchise.

“If Dillon Gabriel or Shedeur Sanders can’t beat out a 40-year-old Joe Flacco, they likely aren’t it,” Fragoza noted, emphasizing the urgency for the Browns to find a long-term solution.

Nussmeier’s Rising Stock

Garrett Nussmeier has been making waves in college football, particularly with his performance against the Clemson Tigers, showcasing a deep understanding of the quarterback position. While his game isn’t without flaws, it reflects the potential that could translate to the NFL. In the previous season, he threw for an impressive 4,052 yards, notching 29 touchdowns against 12 interceptions, placing him on the radar of professional scouts.

This season, Nussmeier has continued to impress. Over two games, he has completed 68.4% of his passes, accumulating 469 yards along with two touchdowns and just one interception. His ability to command the offense is evident, as he effectively orchestrates plays at the line of scrimmage, reads defenses, and quickly processes information to find his options.

Strengths and Skills

Daniel Jeremiah of NFL.com has praised Nussmeier’s game, highlighting several of his key attributes. His ability to lead the offense and direct traffic based on defensive alignments stands out. He showcases a quick release and a compact throwing motion that allows him to deliver catchable passes.

Nussmeier’s toughness is also commendable; he maintains composure in the pocket, delivering accurate throws even when under pressure. While he may not be the most agile mover, he skillfully avoids defenders and can extend plays outside the traditional structure. His proficiency with deep throws and ability to navigate over and under defenders demonstrate his versatility and skill set.

As Nussmeier continues to develop, he could very well emerge as the top quarterback in the 2026 draft class. However, he must solidify his position with strong performances moving forward, as the Browns consider their next steps in the quest for a franchise quarterback.
