Payton Addresses Penalties in Broncos’ First Meeting After Bye
In the aftermath of the bye week, Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton convened the team for a crucial meeting focused on two primary areas for improvement: penalties and the plus/minus turnover differential. These issues have plagued the Broncos throughout the season, and as they regroup, they find themselves at the bottom of the league with the highest number of penalties.
Penalties Continue to Haunt the Broncos
One player who has drawn attention for his role in the team’s penalty woes is cornerback Riley Moss. As they head into Week 12, Moss had been leading the NFL in penalties, although he has since been overtaken by Kansas City Chiefs offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor. During a conference call on Monday, Payton shed light on Moss’ situation, noting the complexities surrounding his penalties, many of which have been questionable or marginal calls.
“With Riley, sometimes it’s technique; sometimes it’s the traffic opposite of a real good corner,” Payton explained. “Now, Pat hasn’t been healthy, but there are some things that I’m sure he’ll want to clean up. Then there are a few calls we look at, and it’s tough to try to clean up or correct something if you don’t agree with it.”
A Collective Responsibility
While Moss has certainly had his share of penalties, Payton was quick to emphasize that the problem is not confined to any single player. The Broncos as a whole have consistently found themselves on the wrong side of officials’ flags.
“But overall, the penalty thing is not just one player,” Payton stated. “The penalty thing is, by far, when you look at the totality of it, and you do your homework on it, and you look offensively and defensively, that’s something that we as a collective have to get better at.”
As the Broncos prepare for their upcoming games, the focus will be on addressing these issues as a team, hoping to turn their season around and reduce the frequency of penalties that have hindered their performance.
