Broncos Release All-Pro J.T. Gray Following Injury in Debut

The Denver Broncos made a surprising roster move this week, releasing defensive back J.T. Gray with an injury designation after he suffered a hamstring injury during his debut with the team. Gray’s unexpected exit comes on the heels of the NFL trade deadline, a period filled with speculation that ultimately yielded no trades for the Broncos.

Injury Disrupts Promising Start

J.T. Gray, a three-time All-Pro special teams standout, was signed by the Broncos on October 13, reuniting him with former New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton and special teams coordinator Darren Rizzi. Unfortunately, Gray’s first game with Denver, a victory over the Houston Texans, was marred by his injury. Although he did not record any statistics, Gray contributed significantly to Rizzi’s special teams unit, playing 21 snaps before being sidelined.

At 29 years old, Gray was brought in from the Baltimore Ravens’ practice squad to help bolster the Broncos’ struggling special teams. His experience, accumulated over seven seasons with the Saints, included 98 appearances where he recorded 103 combined tackles and three fumble recoveries. His performance in 2021 earned him first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors.

Payton expressed confidence in Gray’s abilities prior to his injury, stating, “He’s terrific in the kicking game. Now we’ll have a chance to evaluate him during the next week and see when and if we’re able to get him up. He’s a difference maker in a lot of areas.”

A Setback for Special Teams

The timing of Gray’s injury is particularly unfortunate as the Broncos’ special teams struggled in his absence. In the same game where he was injured, the unit faced scrutiny for several critical errors, including a blocked field goal and a muffed punt return. Payton addressed the issue, emphasizing the need for improvement and focus within the special teams after reviewing footage of the mishaps.

“We had a video of—again the guys running on late—we showed that video in front of the team and I said, ‘This can’t happen,’” Payton remarked. “We really have to be on point. Sometimes the challenge—when there is an injury or two and a core [special] teamer is playing more on one side of the ball or other, are we getting the same focus still in the kicking game?”

Trade Deadline Activity

Despite extensive rumors leading up to the NFL trade deadline, the Broncos opted to maintain their current roster. There were discussions regarding a potential trade for Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, but the asking price proved too steep for the Broncos. Payton acknowledged the discussions, noting, “I think we discussed a few things, but [it’s] all good. We’ve invested in and like this group and where we are going.”

As the Broncos move forward, Gray’s departure adds another layer of complexity to their special teams strategy, but the team remains focused on their existing players and the path ahead.
