Broncos’ defensive shake-up: Singleton’s struggles force Vance Joseph to consider bold changes ahead of Bengals clash

Broncos’ Defensive Dilemma: Singleton’s Struggles Prompt Vance Joseph’s Consideration of Personnel Changes

The Denver Broncos’ defensive unit, once anticipated to be a powerhouse this season, has failed to meet expectations. This disappointing trend has become glaringly evident over the past few games. Although the team managed a slight recovery against the Los Angeles Chargers, persistent issues call for a reevaluation of strategies. Defensive coordinator Vance Joseph faces pressing decisions as the Broncos prepare for their Week 4 clash with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Alex Singleton’s Decline

At the center of the Broncos’ defensive woes is linebacker Alex Singleton. His performance has been alarmingly subpar, raising concerns about his ability to contribute effectively. After returning from a torn ACL that sidelined him for a significant portion of the previous season, the soon-to-be 32-year-old appears to lack the agility necessary to excel in both run defense and coverage. His once-stellar downhill play has diminished considerably, leaving the Broncos vulnerable.

With fellow linebacker Dre Greenlaw now on injured reserve, the Broncos are in a tough spot. However, the need for change is critical. Continuing to rely on Singleton in his current form simply isn’t viable. In contrast, Justin Strnad has shown promise, performing significantly better and fitting Joseph’s defensive scheme more effectively than Singleton.

Exploring Alternatives

The question now becomes how to adjust the linebacker position. One potential solution is to promote Strnad to Singleton’s current role while inserting Karene Reid into Strnad’s position—a role initially meant for Greenlaw. Reid’s special teams contributions and coverage skills are noteworthy and surpass those of Levelle Bailey, who is currently on the practice squad.

Another avenue could involve promoting Bailey to the active roster, allowing him to take Singleton’s place while keeping Strnad in the role designed for Greenlaw. This dual-path approach reflects the urgency to remove Singleton from the starting lineup, as his current play levels are not only disappointing but have led to discussions about whether he should even remain on the team. Unfortunately, his contract complicates matters.

Navigating a Difficult Situation

As the Broncos gear up for their matchup against the Bengals, Joseph must weigh these personnel changes carefully. The defensive struggles of the season so far have left fans and coaches alike questioning the stability of the unit. The potential for a shake-up in the linebacker corps could serve as a catalyst for improvement, but it will require Joseph’s decisive action.

With the clock ticking down to Monday Night Football, the pressure is on. The Broncos need to solidify their defensive strategy and regain their footing in a competitive league. Every decision counts, and the time for change is now.
