Broncos bolster defense by signing Super Bowl-winning cornerback A.J. Woods to practice squad

The Denver Broncos have made a strategic move to reinforce their defensive lineup ahead of their Week 4 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals. The team announced the addition of cornerback A.J. Woods to their practice squad, coupled with the promotion of fullback Adam Prentice to the 53-man roster.

Roster Changes and Immediate Impact

Prentice’s promotion fills the vacancy left by inside linebacker Dre Greenlaw, who was placed on short-term injured reserve last week. This transition underscores the Broncos’ commitment to maintaining depth in key positions as they navigate the challenges of the season.

Woods, an undrafted free agent in 2024, initially had a brief stint with the Washington Commanders before spending his rookie year on the practice squad of the Philadelphia Eagles. His time with the Eagles culminated in a Super Bowl LIX victory, adding a noteworthy accolade to his early career.

A.J. Woods: Versatile Skill Set

Standing at 5-foot-9 and weighing 186 pounds, Woods brings a versatile skill set to the Broncos’ secondary. Known for his ability to play both slot and boundary corner positions, Woods was a consistent contributor during his five seasons at the University of Pittsburgh. He recorded impressive statistics, including 70 solo tackles, 29 pass breakups, four interceptions, and two sacks over 59 games.

In a pre-draft interview, Woods expressed confidence in his adaptability on the field. “I’m hearing the nickel from some teams. I’m also hearing that I’m versatile enough to play outside because so much of my tape at Pittsburgh is at boundary corner. No matter which position I play on the back end, I’m confident that I’ll be successful,” he stated.

Woods highlighted his unique skill set, emphasizing his speed, quick footwork, and football intelligence. “I have a certain skill set that allows me to be successful at multiple positions,” he noted, referencing his performances both at Pittsburgh and during the all-star game circuit. His physicality in run support and ability to cover larger receivers on the outside further showcases his capabilities.

Looking Ahead for the Broncos

With Woods joining the ranks, he becomes the fourth defensive back added to the Broncos’ roster this season. The team’s decision to enhance their defensive depth reflects a proactive approach as they prepare to face the Bengals. As the Broncos gear up for the upcoming clash, all eyes will be on how Woods can integrate into the defensive scheme and contribute to the team’s success in the challenging weeks ahead.
