Brock Purdy shines with five touchdowns in 49ers’ thrilling 42-38 victory over Bears

SANTA CLARA — In a game that will be remembered for its back-and-forth excitement, the San Francisco 49ers edged the Chicago Bears 42-38, putting themselves just one win away from clinching the coveted No. 1 seed in the NFC and securing a first-round bye in the playoffs. As the dust settles on this exhilarating encounter, let’s break down the performance of each unit.

Quarterback: A

Brock Purdy’s performance was nothing short of remarkable. After a dismal opening play that saw him throw a pick-six, many expected him to falter. Instead, he bounced back with resilience, throwing for three touchdowns and rushing for two more, marking his second consecutive game with five total touchdowns. His ability to execute the zone-read play has turned it into one of the 49ers’ most effective short-yardage options, especially in the absence of key players like George Kittle and Trent Williams.

Before halftime, a near-interception was wiped away due to a questionable penalty, allowing him to score on the subsequent play. While he had a stroke of luck, Purdy’s clutch performance at the end of the game, leading the offense downfield for a critical touchdown, showcased his composure under pressure. In comparison to Caleb Williams, who struggled on his final drive, Purdy clearly demonstrated his superior abilities.

Running Backs: A-Plus

Christian McCaffrey was the standout performer in the backfield, rushing 23 times for 140 yards and a touchdown. He displayed the kind of skill and determination that makes him a contender for the Offensive Player of the Year award. Notably, he accomplished this feat without a Hall of Fame blocker to assist him, proving his worth to the team.

Wide Receivers: B-Plus

Jauan Jennings continued to make his mark, scoring his ninth touchdown of the season. With the impending free agency looming, it’s likely that he’ll command a hefty contract elsewhere, possibly exceeding $20 million per season. However, the 49ers seem poised to rely on their depth, evidenced by Ricky Peasall’s impressive 85 yards, all while battling a persistent PCL injury.

Tight Ends: A

With George Kittle sidelined, Jake Tonges stepped up and led the team with nine targets, converting seven of them into receptions, including a touchdown. His performance showcased his potential as a starting-caliber tight end, and the 49ers would be wise to continue featuring him alongside Kittle when he returns, forming a formidable duo.

Offensive Linemen: A

Despite missing Trent Williams, the offensive line dominated the Bears’ defensive front, allowing just one sack—an unfortunate miscommunication where Purdy failed to spot an incoming rusher. Spencer Burford has emerged as a revelation at left guard, contributing to an impressive interior offensive line performance.

Defensive Linemen: F

In stark contrast, the defensive line struggled mightily, failing to contain the run and not managing to sack Caleb Williams. Bryce Huff’s lack of production since Week 7 has been particularly concerning, leaving a significant void in the defensive strategy.

Linebackers: F

The linebacker group also fell short, allowing 110 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns. Additionally, they struggled to contain rookie tight end Colston Loveland, surrendering 98 yards and a touchdown. This lack of coverage has been a recurring theme for the 49ers.

Defensive Backs: F

The secondary’s performance was disappointing, with Ji’Ayir Brown allowing Luther Burden to slip past him for a deep touchdown in the first half. This unit collectively allowed 330 passing yards and two touchdowns to a quarterback who has shown inconsistency throughout the season.

Special Teams: A

On a positive note, the special teams unit remained reliable, with Eddy Pineiro proving to be a dependable presence without any missed attempts.

Coaches: C

Kyle Shanahan orchestrated a brilliant game plan, managing to score 42 points without his star players. The offensive show’s success is a testament to his coaching prowess, making a strong case for Coach of the Year. However, the same cannot be said for Robert Saleh’s defense, which struggled to halt the Bears’ offensive momentum. While the absence of key defensive players is a factor, the inconsistency must improve if the 49ers hope for a successful playoff run, even with homefield advantage and a bye week potential.
