Brian Schottenheimer vows Cowboys offense will improve despite Dak Prescott’s MVP-level performances

Schottenheimer Sees Room for Improvement in Cowboys Offense

The Dallas Cowboys have been lighting up the scoreboard this season, scoring 40 points for the third time in as many home games as they routed the Washington Commanders 44-22 at AT&T Stadium. While Dak Prescott’s performances have garnered attention and placed him among potential NFL MVP candidates, offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer remains focused on areas for improvement.

Prescott’s Standout Performance

Dak Prescott showcased his talent once again, throwing three touchdown passes without an interception, a feat that underscores his ability to lead the Cowboys through tough moments. Despite the team’s offensive firepower, Prescott has been subjected to significant pressure, and Schottenheimer acknowledges that this approach may need re-evaluation.

Addressing Prescott’s Exposure

In his post-game analysis, Schottenheimer expressed concern over the number of hits Prescott absorbed during the game. “He got hit a lot today, and I didn’t like that and he didn’t like that,” Schottenheimer remarked. He recognized that his play-calling may have contributed to Prescott’s excessive exposure to contact, noting, “I probably needed to get him a few more completions midway through the second quarter, because he was getting popped pretty good.”

The coordinator admitted that his emotional response to penalties led him to push for more aggressive plays, which might have come at the expense of Prescott’s safety. “I think I got a little bit aggressive. I was getting pissed with the penalties and calling too many shots and that’s on me. I told him that and I said, ‘hey I’ll be better,’ and that’s what we did,” he explained.

Balancing Aggression and Safety

It’s a fine line between an aggressive offensive strategy and ensuring the quarterback’s safety. While Prescott’s statistics reflect a potent attack, the reality of the hits he took—one notably dislodging his helmet—cannot be overlooked. Schottenheimer’s desire to incorporate deep passes with talented receivers like CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens is understandable, but maintaining a balance is crucial.

Looking Ahead

As they prepare to face tougher opponents, the Cowboys must find ways to refine their offensive rhythm. Schottenheimer’s candid acknowledgment of the need for improvement is a promising sign for fans hoping to see this high-scoring team evolve further. With adjustments in play-calling and a focus on protecting their star quarterback, the Cowboys aim to not only maintain their offensive prowess but also enhance it as the season progresses.
