Brian Branch Faces $23,186 Fine for Hit on Giants Player
Detroit Lions safety Brian Branch has found himself in the spotlight for the second consecutive week as the NFL announced a substantial fine on Saturday. Branch was penalized $23,186 for an unnecessary roughness infraction involving a hit on a defenseless player during the Lions’ recent match against the New York Giants. This latest fine follows a similar penalty from the previous week when he was also cited for a hit on a player during a game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Additional Fines for Lions Players
Branch was not the only Detroit player facing financial repercussions from the matchup against the Giants. Linebacker Jack Campbell received a fine of $17,389 for executing a hip-drop tackle, while offensive lineman Dan Skipper was fined $6,917 due to taunting during the game. These fines highlight the ongoing scrutiny players face regarding their on-field conduct.
Branch’s History of Fines
This season has been particularly challenging for Branch, who has accumulated an unfortunate history of fines. Earlier in the year, he was penalized for two separate incidents during the Lions’ Week 1 loss to the Green Bay Packers. His fines included a low block against the Ravens and a helmet-to-helmet hit against the Eagles. Additionally, Branch faced a one-game suspension earlier this season due to a postgame altercation with Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster.
Branch’s Season Performance
Despite the off-field controversies, Branch has been a significant contributor to the Lions this season. In 11 games, he has recorded 69 combined tackles, alongside five tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. His performance on the field has showcased his skill, even as he navigates the challenges of player conduct policies.
Upcoming Fallout from Week 13 Loss
As the NFL typically announces fines on a weekly basis, it remains to be seen what financial consequences might arise from the Lions’ recent Week 13 loss to the Green Bay Packers. Any fines associated with that game will be disclosed next Saturday, leaving players on edge about potential further penalties.
Ragnow’s Physical Setback
In another development, the Lions are dealing with the fallout from center Frank Ragnow’s failed physical. Ragnow, suffering from a Grade 3 hamstring strain, will not be rejoining the team, adding another layer of complexity to the Lions’ roster management as they move forward in the season.
