Brandon Graham’s Bold Move to Defensive Tackle at 37
In a league often dominated by youth, Brandon Graham is proving that age is just a number. The Philadelphia Eagles defensive lineman, now 37, is making headlines with his seamless transition to a full-time defensive tackle. While Graham has played the position in spurts throughout his illustrious career, his recent performances showcase a commitment to mastering this new role.
A New Chapter for Graham
Graham’s shift to defensive tackle has become particularly pronounced in recent games, especially with rookie sensation Jalen Carter sidelined due to shoulder injuries. This change allows Graham to focus exclusively on the techniques required for interior play, rather than bouncing back and forth between positions, as he has done in the past.
In the Eagles’ latest matchup against the Chargers, Graham played nearly all his snaps at defensive tackle, a position he famously occupied when he executed that memorable strip-sack against Tom Brady in the 2018 Super Bowl.
Embracing the Challenge
With his new role, Graham has been soaking up invaluable knowledge with defensive line coach Clint Hurtt. He acknowledges the differences between playing on the edge and the interior, highlighting the need for speed and technique.
“It feels good because I feel quick in there,” Graham remarked. “You have to have both feet in the ground when you’re in there. I’m just trying to make sure the technique is about getting your feet in the ground fast as you’re striking.”
The speed of play is markedly different at defensive tackle. Graham described how guards move aggressively to engage their blocks. “You don’t have as much space as you do as an outside linebacker,” he explained. “As soon as you get off the rock, you have to use your hands right away because the guard, he doesn’t like space; he’s trying to minimize as much space as he can.”
Dedication Beyond the Field
Graham’s commitment to his new position is evident in his practice habits. After training sessions, he has been putting in extra work to refine his skills. “I was out there doing some extra, to make sure I’m contributing and helping the best way I can,” he stated, showcasing his determination to adapt and excel.
Despite not recording any tackles in his recent game, Graham played 30 snaps, his most significant workload since returning from retirement on October 21. He expressed gratitude for his body’s response to the demands of the game, saying, “I thought I was gonna be a little more sore, but just taking care of my body. I think it was nice just how we all rotated in the game.”
Looking Ahead
As he continues to adjust to his role at defensive tackle, both Graham and defensive coordinator Vic Fangio see potential for growth. “I feel comfortable,” Graham noted. “If I am gonna be in the middle, I have to make sure I’m holding my ground and making sure I got the right technique, especially if I get double-teamed.”
He acknowledges the ongoing journey that lies ahead: “It’s a daily walk with it.” With the right mindset and work ethic, Graham is not just adapting but potentially redefining what it means to be a defensive lineman at 37 in the NFL.
