Bills Sign Mitch Wishnowsky Following Cameron Johnston’s Injury
The Buffalo Bills have turned to a new punter in the wake of Cameron Johnston’s injury, which occurred during their Week 4 victory against the New Orleans Saints. In a strategic move to bolster their special teams, the Bills have signed Mitch Wishnowsky, as reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Injury Details
Johnston sustained ankle and foot injuries in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s game against the Saints. The injury was a result of a hard hit from Saints linebacker Nephi Sewell, who was subsequently penalized for roughing the kicker. This injury has left the Bills scrambling to fill the punting role as they aim to maintain their momentum in the season.
Wishnowsky’s Background
Mitch Wishnowsky, a former fourth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers, comes with six seasons of experience in the league. During his tenure with the 49ers, he averaged a net of 40.7 yards per punt. However, his last season in San Francisco was less than stellar, with a net average dropping to 36.3 yards per punt. He was released in May when the team opted to sign veteran punter Thomas Morstead.
Punting Challenges for the Bills
The Bills initially started the season with Brad Robbins as their punter, but he was released after a Week 1 showing that yielded an unsatisfactory average of 38 yards on four punts. Johnston stepped in but struggled to improve the situation, averaging only 37.9 yards over seven punts in his brief time with the team.
With Wishnowsky now on board, the Bills are hopeful that his experience and past performance will solidify their special teams unit as they navigate through the remainder of the season.
