Bills call on Dorian Williams to fill the gap as Milano’s absence creates opportunity for young linebacker

The Buffalo Bills are once again leaning on Dorian Williams as they navigate another absence from linebacker Matt Milano. Over the past two seasons, Williams has shown his ability to step up when Milano, a key defensive player, has faced injury setbacks.

Milano’s Injury Forces Change

In a perfect scenario, Bills defensive coordinator Bobby Babich would combine the tackling prowess of Milano with the speed of Williams. However, the reality is that the team must rely on both players’ strengths separately. Williams is set to take the field as a starter on Thursday night when the Bills face off against the struggling Miami Dolphins at Highmark Stadium.

Milano, who sustained a chest injury during last week’s dominant victory against the New York Jets, did not return for the second half and has been ruled out for the upcoming game. This continues a troubling trend for the veteran linebacker, who has battled injuries that limited him to just 11 regular-season games over the past two seasons.

Williams Steps Up

Selected in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft, Williams made a strong impression in 2024, starting in 11 games. His value to the Bills has grown due to Milano’s frequent injuries. Last week, Williams was thrown into action, logging 47 snaps in the first two games of the season and notching six tackles along with a quarterback pressure.

When discussing his preparation for the upcoming game, Williams stated, “You have to prepare the same every week.” His approach reflects the mindset needed to fill such a significant role, even if he does not possess the same intensity and technique that Milano brings to the field.

A Temporary Solution

While losing a player of Milano’s caliber can be daunting for any NFL defense, Williams offers the Bills considerable reassurance as a temporary solution. His athleticism compensates for the void left by Milano, allowing Buffalo to remain competitive despite the challenges.

As the Bills prepare for their next matchup, Williams’ ability to adapt and perform under pressure will be critical. The team has faith in his capacity to uphold the defensive standards required to contend in the league, even while they await Milano’s return.
