Bills strengthen practice squad with Phidarian Mathis aiming to enhance defensive line for Jets battle

The Buffalo Bills have taken steps to bolster their practice squad ahead of their pivotal Week 2 clash against the New York Jets by signing defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis. The former second-round pick of the Washington Commanders brings a blend of size and versatility that the Bills hope will address their defensive line challenges.

A Look at Mathis’ Background

Mathis, standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 315 pounds, enters Buffalo’s roster after spending three seasons in Washington, where he participated in 23 games. During the 2024 season, he recorded 17 tackles, including two for loss, over the span of 12 games. His experience and physicality make him a valuable addition as the Bills prepare for a demanding matchup.

Filling the Practice Squad Spot

The Bills had an open spot on their practice squad following the signing of kicker Matt Prater to the 53-man roster. Prater’s standout performance in the thrilling victory against the Baltimore Ravens warranted his promotion, but it also left the team seeking depth in other areas, particularly on the defensive line.

Mathis’ signing reflects General Manager Brandon Beane’s ongoing commitment to shoring up the defensive trenches, which faced significant challenges in the previous game. The Bills allowed the Ravens to accumulate a staggering 238 rushing yards, with running back Derrick Henry racking up 169 yards and two touchdowns, and quarterback Lamar Jackson adding 70 yards and a rushing touchdown of his own.

Adding Depth to the Defensive Line

Alongside Mathis, the Bills have defensive tackles Jordan Phillips and Zion Logue on the practice squad. Additionally, they are currently managing a suspension for Larry Ogunjobi, who will be sidelined for the first six weeks of the season. The combination of Mathis’ experience and the existing talent on the squad gives Buffalo a more formidable presence as they strive to tighten their run defense.

The addition of Phidarian Mathis underscores the Bills’ proactive approach to improving their roster and addressing weaknesses as they gear up for the upcoming challenge against the Jets. With his experience and skill set, Mathis could prove to be a crucial asset in the weeks ahead.
