Bengals Secure Former Jets QB Mike White as Joe Burrow Faces Extended Recovery

The Cincinnati Bengals have taken decisive action following the injury of star quarterback Joe Burrow, signing former New York Jets quarterback Mike White to bolster their roster. This move comes after Burrow was diagnosed with turf toe, an injury that will require surgery and could sideline him for up to three months.

Burrow’s Injury and Impending Surgery

During Sunday’s nail-biting 31-27 victory over the Jacksonville Jaguars, Burrow left the game in the second quarter, unable to return. Post-game, he was seen navigating the locker room on crutches, sporting a walking boot. Bengals head coach Zac Taylor confirmed in a news conference that Burrow will undergo surgery for his injury, stating, “We are working through the details and timelines. We will go through the week and get all the information we can.”

According to league sources, Burrow’s recovery is expected to be lengthy, with estimates suggesting he will miss at least three months. This timeline significantly impacts the Bengals as they look to maintain their momentum in a competitive season.

Browning Steps Up

In Burrow’s absence, backup quarterback Jake Browning stepped into the spotlight, leading the Bengals to a remarkable comeback against the Jaguars. Browning completed 21 of 32 passes for 241 yards, throwing two touchdowns. His decisive 1-yard quarterback sneak in the closing moments clinched the victory, showcasing his ability to perform under pressure.

New Additions to the Roster

In light of Burrow’s injury, the Bengals are not only signing Mike White but also former Packers quarterback Sean Clifford to their practice squad. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the developments, highlighting the urgency of the Bengals’ roster adjustments.

White, who gained recognition during his time with the Jets, notably threw for 369 yards against the Minnesota Vikings in 2022. He started seven games for New York and has since had stints with the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills, bringing valuable experience to the Bengals as they navigate this challenging period.

The Road Ahead for Cincinnati

With Burrow expected to miss significant time, Cincinnati’s playoff aspirations will hinge on the performance of Browning and White as they adjust to their new roles in the offense. The Bengals are looking to sustain their competitive edge in the league, and the next few weeks will be crucial as they adapt to the absence of their star quarterback.

As the team prepares for the upcoming games, all eyes will be on the newly formed quarterback duo, who will be tasked with keeping the Bengals’ playoff hopes alive during Burrow’s recovery.
