Bengals bolster defense with Mike Pennel’s debut as he dominates with highest stop rate in win against Browns

CINCINNATI — In a significant roster move, the Cincinnati Bengals have signed veteran defensive tackle Mike Pennel to their 53-man roster, while simultaneously placing guard Lucas Patrick on injured reserve due to a calf injury sustained during the season opener against the Cleveland Browns. Patrick’s injury will sideline him for a minimum of four games, intensifying the need for a robust defensive presence.

Mike Pennel’s Impactful Debut

Pennel, who joined the Bengals just six days prior to the game, made an immediate impact in his debut, contributing to a defensive performance that stifled the Browns’ rushing attack. The Bengals held Cleveland to a mere three yards per carry, showcasing the effectiveness of their revamped defensive line.

Statistically, Pennel emerged as a standout, achieving the highest stop rate at 19% among defensive linemen who played over 20 snaps, according to NFL+. His presence in the middle of the defensive line proved to be a game-changer, as he recorded four tackles during the contest, solidifying his role in the team’s defensive strategy.

Coaching Praise and Future Prospects

Bengals head coach Zac Taylor expressed confidence in Pennel’s abilities, noting, “I think he played about 22 plays per game last year in every single game all through the Super Bowl. [We] watched all of his training camp stuff, all his preseason game stuff, and thought, this is an easy decision to get this guy over here.” Taylor emphasized that Pennel’s recent practice and game experience made him a seamless addition to the roster, in contrast to other options who may not have been as prepared.

Currently, Pennel is among six defensive tackles on the Bengals’ roster, joining a group that includes TJ Slaton, BJ Hill, Kris Jenkins Jr., McKinnley Jackson, and Howard Cross III. As the Bengals look to fine-tune their lineup, there may be opportunities to adjust the roster, potentially moving Cross or Jackson to the practice squad to better balance the team’s needs.

A Promising Future for the Defense

With Pennel’s strength and experience, the Bengals have fortified their defensive unit, setting the stage for a promising season ahead. The coaching staff and players alike have expressed optimism about his ability to contribute significantly as the season progresses. As the Bengals prepare for their next matchup, fans will be eager to see how Pennel continues to influence their defensive strategy.
