Ben Johnson’s puzzling play-calling nearly sinks Bears in miraculous 19-17 win over Vikings

Ben Johnson’s Questionable Play-Calling Nearly Costs Bears in 19-17 Victory Over Vikings

Ben Johnson, head coach of the Chicago Bears, has been lauded for orchestrating what appears to be a revival for this historically struggling franchise. Under his guidance, the Bears have shown substantial improvement compared to the lackluster teams of the past, often hindered by poor coaching decisions. Yet, during the Bears’ narrow 19-17 victory over the Minnesota Vikings in Week 11, Johnson’s play-calling raised eyebrows and nearly derailed the team’s chance at success.

Puzzling Decisions in Key Moments

Despite the positive momentum, Johnson’s game plan sparked frustration among fans and analysts alike. His reluctance to lean on the run game early in the contest was particularly perplexing. Known for his commitment to establishing a strong ground attack, Johnson instead opted for a more pass-heavy approach, which seemed counterintuitive. As the game progressed, the Bears faced critical third-and-short situations, yet Johnson again shied away from handoffs, favoring passes that fell short of the mark.

The passing game itself was equally confounding. One notable occurrence was the targeting of Durham Smythe, a player many fans might have forgotten was on the roster. Smythe received three targets, including a pivotal drop on third down that could have shifted the game’s momentum. Instead of utilizing more dynamic options like Colston Loveland, Rome Odunze, or DJ Moore, Johnson’s decision-making led to missed opportunities that contributed to a shaky performance against a markedly inferior Vikings team.

Caleb Williams: A Mixed Performance

Quarterback Caleb Williams’ performance also drew scrutiny. Although statistical analysis might reveal a different narrative upon review, the broadcast showcased a lackluster outing: 16 completions on 32 attempts for just 193 yards and no touchdowns. While Williams made some crucial plays, his overall performance left much to be desired. He managed to protect the ball, which is vital, but it felt as though he missed several chances to capitalize on scoring drives, leaving fans wanting more.

Rookie Kyle Monangai’s Decline

In just two weeks, rookie running back Kyle Monangai’s trajectory changed dramatically. After showcasing his potential with explosive runs against Cincinnati and New York, Monangai struggled to find his footing on Sunday, accumulating only 23 yards on 12 carries. His once-promising performance was overshadowed by D’Andre Swift, who emerged as a dynamic force with 90 yards on 21 carries. Despite scoring the Bears’ only touchdown of the day, Monangai’s need for improvement is evident if he wishes to earn a more significant role moving forward.

Looking Ahead for the Bears

As the Bears continue their season, the pressure mounts on Johnson to refine his decision-making. The close call against the Vikings has left lingering doubts about the team’s ability to maintain their position in the NFC North. With upcoming games on the horizon, the coaching staff will need to address these concerns to solidify their standing and capitalize on the talent within the roster. The Bears’ journey is far from over, and the stakes are higher than ever.
