Ben Johnson drops optimism bombshell: Rome Odunze eyes postseason return despite foot fracture setback

Ben Johnson Shares Optimism About Rome Odunze’s Return

Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson is known for his singular focus on the task at hand, often repeating his mantra of going 1-0 each week. However, he took a moment during Tuesday’s practice to shed some light on the situation surrounding one of his key players, wide receiver Rome Odunze, who has been sidelined by a foot injury.

Odunze is currently recovering from what has been reported as a fracture in his foot, causing him to miss the last three games. Despite the setback, Johnson’s comments suggest a hopeful outlook for the second-year player, hinting at a possible return during the postseason.

Rehabilitation Progress

“We’ve been working through his rehab process,” Johnson stated. “He’s right on track. He’s going to be in a good spot.”

This assertion indicates that Johnson does not view Odunze’s injury as a long-term issue that would necessitate a stint on injured reserve. “He’s going to be able to help us this year,” he added, reinforcing the belief that Odunze could contribute significantly as the season progresses.

Earlier in the week, Johnson expressed similar sentiments regarding slot cornerback Kyler Gordon, who is also working through his own injury.

Odunze’s Impact Before Injury

Before his injury, Odunze had established himself as a vital component of the Bears’ offense, leading the team in both receptions and receiving yards. With 44 catches for 661 yards, he was a key target for quarterback Justin Fields. However, during Odunze’s absence, DJ Moore has stepped up, taking over the team lead with 48 receptions for 668 yards, while both players have recorded six touchdown receptions.

The competition for targets has intensified, as rookie tight end Colston Loveland is also emerging as a significant contributor, closing in with 42 catches for 528 yards and four touchdowns.

Looking Ahead

As the Bears continue to navigate the challenges of the season, the potential return of Odunze is a beacon of hope for both the team and its fans. With Johnson’s confidence in Odunze’s recovery process, anticipation builds around what this talented wide receiver could bring to the field in the coming weeks. The Bears are rallying after a thrilling victory against the Green Bay Packers, and Odunze’s return could provide a crucial boost as they aim for a strong postseason push.
