Bears’ Run Defense Faces Critical Test Against Bengals
The Chicago Bears’ run defense is set to take center stage in their Week 9 showdown against the Cincinnati Bengals. While much of the pre-game chatter has focused on the Bears’ offense facing off against the Bengals’ struggling defense, the true determinant of victory may lie in the hands of Chicago’s defense.
A Shift in Bengals’ Rushing Attack
In a surprising turn of events, the Bengals’ rushing attack has gained momentum in recent weeks. Despite ranking 31st in total rushing yards, they have managed to elevate their performance, currently sitting sixth in expected points added (EPA) per play. This resurgence can largely be attributed to the contributions of running backs Chase Brown and Samaje Perine.
As noted by Pro Football Focus, Brown and Perine combined for 167 rushing yards and two touchdowns in a strong performance against the Jets in Week 8. Over the past two games, Brown has particularly shone, racking up 181 yards and one touchdown while averaging an impressive 7.9 yards per carry.
Bears’ Defensive Challenges
On the other side, the Bears’ run defense has its work cut out. Ranked 17th in PFF’s grading system against the run, Chicago will need to tighten its performance to contain the Bengals’ emerging ground game. The matchup between the Bears’ defensive line and the Bengals’ offensive front will be crucial.
With the stakes high, the Bears must find a way to disrupt the momentum built by Cincinnati’s running backs. If they can successfully stifle the Bengals’ rushing attack, it could significantly shift the game in Chicago’s favor.
As both teams prepare for this pivotal matchup, all eyes will be on the battle in the trenches, where the outcome could very well dictate the game’s direction.
