Bears Face Offensive Line Challenge with Potential Starters Out
The Chicago Bears have often prided themselves on the resilience of their revamped offensive line, demonstrating a remarkable ability to adapt throughout the season. Even in the face of adversity, this unit has shown a knack for stepping up when needed. Recently, they navigated the absence of Darnell Wright for one game, and last week, right tackle Theo Benedet faced worries about missing action due to illness. Yet, come game day, he surprised many by making it to Santa Clara ready to play.
Injury Concerns for Trapilo
However, the Bears now find themselves in a precarious situation as they could potentially be without two starting linemen for an important game. Ozzy Trapilo, who has recently taken over as the starting left tackle, has been limited in practice for two consecutive days due to knee and quad injuries. If he is unable to suit up on Sunday—or if the coaching staff opts to err on the side of caution to protect him for the playoffs—Benedet would likely step in, having already started six games at left tackle earlier this season.
Jonah Jackson’s Illness Complicates Matters
Further complicating the offensive line situation is the recent development involving right guard Jonah Jackson, who missed practice Thursday due to illness. Interestingly, Jackson had been healthy enough to participate in the Wednesday walkthrough, making his sudden absence a concern for the Bears.
Fortunately, the Bears have some depth to rely on. Luke Newman has returned from injured reserve, and veteran guard/tackle Jordan McFadden is on the 53-man roster. Newman has seen limited action, participating in 25 offensive plays this season and contributing to special teams across nine games. McFadden has been utilized in six games, mostly on special teams, with only one offensive play to his name.
Jackson’s Impact on the Line
Jonah Jackson has been a standout performer this season, reminiscent of his impressive form from 2021 and 2022. His explosiveness and agility set him apart from many guards in the league. The dynamic duo of Jackson and Wright has been particularly effective in the run game, showcasing a level of synergy that has been a highlight for the Bears this year.
As the Bears prepare for a pivotal matchup, the looming uncertainty surrounding Trapilo and Jackson presents a significant challenge. The depth in their offensive line will be put to the test as they aim to maintain their competitive edge in the upcoming game.
