Baltimore Ravens secure playoff hopes with commanding 24-0 victory over Bengals
The Baltimore Ravens delivered a season-defining performance in Week 15, overpowering the Cincinnati Bengals with a stunning 24-0 shutout on the road. This victory not only bolstered their playoff aspirations but also improved their record to 7-7, keeping them in striking distance of the top spot in the fiercely competitive AFC North. For the first time in nearly two months, the Ravens showcased a well-rounded effort across all three phases of the game, each complementing the other rather than holding back.
Ravens achieve complementary football at last
This decisive win marked just the second instance this season where the Ravens effectively executed complementary football in all aspects of the game. It was also the first time franchise quarterback Lamar Jackson led the charge as the starting quarterback during such a performance. The only other occasion came in Week 8 when backup quarterback Tyler Huntley ignited a five-game winning streak against the Chicago Bears.
Against the Bengals, the Ravens’ offense outperformed their opponents despite possessing the ball for less than half the game (39:19 to 20:41). They managed to average an impressive 7.9 yards per play and turned the ball over only once, a miscue attributed to a drop by rookie wide receiver Zay Flowers. The Ravens were poised to capitalize on their sole red zone opportunity, but another dropped pass by Flowers in the back of the end zone thwarted their scoring chance.
On the defensive side, the Ravens did more than just contain the Bengals; they imposed their will throughout the contest. The defense maintained a relentless pressure, forcing multiple turnovers while not allowing Cincinnati to find the end zone at all. Their efforts included a notable pick-six that further solidified their dominance.
Special teams excel in all areas
The special teams unit also played a pivotal role in the Ravens’ victory. Rookie kicker Tyler Loop displayed his reliability, converting all his field goals without any landing zone penalties. Punter Jordan Stout consistently pinned the Bengals deep within their territory, limiting their offensive opportunities. Meanwhile, the coverage teams mirrored the physicality and cohesiveness demonstrated by the defense, contributing to the overall success of the game.
Head coach John Harbaugh underscored the significance of the performance, stating, “It was our best football game of the year; [it was] complementary football [in] all three phases, coming off our best week of practice – and we’ve had good weeks of practice. I told them I’m so proud of them for that reason.”
Running game remains a formidable force
As the Ravens look ahead, their running game continues to assert itself as a dominant force. Each element of their offensive strategy appears to be falling into place, providing a solid foundation for the team as they push towards the postseason.
In this critical juncture of the season, the Ravens seem to have discovered their rhythm at the perfect time, setting the stage for a thrilling finish to the regular season. Their ability to harness the strengths of each phase of the game will be crucial as they fight for a playoff berth in the coming weeks.
