Baltimore Ravens’ 2000 Defense Celebrates a Quarter-Century of Greatness Against Steelers

25 years have passed since the Baltimore Ravens’ defense, one of the most formidable units in NFL history, played an instrumental role in securing the franchise’s first Super Bowl title. The Ravens triumphed over the New York Giants with a commanding 34-7 victory, and the team is set to commemorate this milestone in a grand celebration.

A Reunion to Remember

The franchise has planned a special tribute during their Week 14 showdown against the Pittsburgh Steelers, a rivalry steeped in history. More than 50 members of the iconic 2000 team are anticipated to attend, including legends like Ray Lewis, Jonathan Ogden, and Trent Dilfer.

Festivities will kick off with a parade down RavensWalk, starting before noon local time. This event will feature members from that championship squad, providing fans with the opportunity to relive those unforgettable moments.

The pre-game introductions will also spotlight former Ravens head coach Brian Billick along with nine of his assistant coaches. Jonathan Ogden will take on the role of honorary captain, while Ray Lewis will be recognized as the Legend of the Game.

Halftime Honors for a Legendary Team

As halftime approaches, the Ravens’ Super Bowl-winning team will be celebrated in a special on-field ceremony. Both Billick and Lewis are expected to address the crowd, sharing insights and reflections from that memorable season.

The Legacy of the 2000 Ravens

The 2000 Ravens left an indelible mark on the franchise and the league at large, transforming the team from a fledgling franchise into champions in a remarkably short span. Their defense was the cornerstone of their success, achieving a stunning feat of shutting out four opponents during the season, including three in their first four games. They allowed fewer than 10 points in nine different contests, finishing at the top in both points allowed and rushing yards surrendered.

Ray Lewis, a standout linebacker and future Hall of Famer, anchored the defense with remarkable statistics. He recorded 137 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, six pass deflections, two interceptions, three sacks, and three fumble recoveries throughout the season.

On the offensive side, running back Jamal Lewis emerged as a vital player in his rookie year, rushing for 1,364 yards and six touchdowns, ultimately finishing third in the Offensive Rookie of the Year voting.

The 2000 Ravens roster boasted four future Hall of Famers: Ray Lewis, Ogden, tight end Shannon Sharpe, and defensive back Rod Woodson. In addition, five players were selected to the Pro Bowl, underscoring the team’s depth of talent.

The coaching staff, featuring future head coaches like Marvin Lewis, Jack Del Rio, Rex Ryan, and Mike Smith, further highlights the caliber of that Ravens team.

As the city of Baltimore prepares to honor this historic squad, the legacy of the 2000 Ravens remains a timeless chapter in both the franchise’s history and the annals of the NFL.
