Austin Jackson’s Return Sparks Debate on Dolphins’ Offensive Line
The Miami Dolphins find themselves in a unique position as they prepare for the potential return of starting right tackle Austin Jackson. Head coach Mike McDaniel recently noted that while fans and analysts may find the team’s offensive line play surprising, the unit has enjoyed notable success over the last month. However, Jackson’s upcoming return from a toe injury raises questions about how the Dolphins will approach their offensive line strategy.
Continuity Breeds Success
The Dolphins have managed to field the same offensive line for the past eight games, marking their longest streak of continuity since 2012. This stability has undeniably contributed to the team’s improved performance. Jackson, who received a contract extension just two seasons ago, is recognized as the most accomplished right tackle on the roster. His imminent return is anticipated to bolster the offensive line further—at least on paper.
Yet, the situation is more complicated than it initially appears. The possibility of moving Larry Borom, the current starting right tackle, to right guard has emerged as a topic of discussion. Borom has extensive experience at guard, and his recent performances have been more consistent than those of current starting right guard Cole Strange. With James Daniels potentially sidelined for the remainder of the season, the Dolphins might seek to maximize their best five offensive linemen on the field.
A Cautious Approach
Despite these considerations, McDaniel has not yet committed to a definitive plan. His priority is to ensure that Jackson can handle the demands of a full game after being sidelined twice this season. McDaniel emphasized the importance of maintaining Borom’s readiness at right tackle until Jackson is fully acclimated.
“I was going to check with the league to see if we can play with 12 (offensive players),” McDaniel quipped. “If we can’t play with 12, I don’t think it’s as simple as coming back in Week 13 for Austin and him playing the entire game. I would forecast that Larry (Borom) would still play at that position regardless just by there’s only one way to get into football shape and that’s playing football; so I want to be cognizant of that.”
Evaluating Options
While Borom possesses the capability to transition to right guard, McDaniel has been pleased with Strange’s performance in that role. The coach highlighted that any adjustments to the line could disrupt the chemistry that has developed during their recent successes.
“I think what’s been kind of under the radar is over the last handful of weeks specifically, we’ve gotten tremendous play out of our right guard and it may be strange to you, but it’s not to me,” McDaniel explained. “I think it’s not as easy as … (Borom) does give us that utility, but I think you’re also – I’d be trying to solve a problem if I do that and I don’t have a problem on my radar to solve at this stage. We’ll see next week.”
Moving Forward
As the Dolphins continue to find their footing with three wins in their last four games, the effectiveness of the running game has been a vital factor in this success. With the offensive line performing at a commendable level, the urgency to make significant changes is diminished for now.
In the coming days, the Dolphins will monitor Jackson’s condition closely while weighing their options. Flexibility within the offensive line could prove advantageous as they navigate the remainder of the season, but for the moment, the team appears content to keep its current structure in place.
