Atlanta Falcons bolster defense with A.J. Woods ahead of pivotal Patriots matchup
The Atlanta Falcons have made a strategic move to enhance their defensive unit by signing cornerback A.J. Woods to their practice squad, just days before their crucial Week 9 clash against the New England Patriots.
Woods’ Journey to Atlanta
Woods, an undrafted free agent who began his NFL career in 2024, has had a winding path since entering the league. After the draft, he initially signed with the Washington Commanders, but despite his efforts, he did not make the final roster following training camp. He later found an opportunity with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he was placed on their practice squad. Although he did not see game action that season, he earned a Super Bowl ring as the Eagles triumphed in Super Bowl LIX, a testament to his contributions during his rookie year.
Following a productive training camp with Philadelphia, Woods was waived during the team’s roster cuts in August. His next stop was with the Denver Broncos, where he continued to pursue his NFL aspirations. However, his tenure in Denver was cut short when he was released on October 18, shortly before the Broncos signed quarterback Sam Ehlinger to their practice squad.
Impressive College Career
At the University of Pittsburgh, Woods showcased his versatility on the field, capable of playing both in the slot and on the perimeter. Over five seasons, he participated in 59 games, recording 105 tackles (70 solo), seven tackles for loss, 29 pass breakups, four interceptions, two sacks, and a forced fumble. His final collegiate season saw him start five of twelve games, accumulating 30 tackles, 3.5 tackles for loss, three pass breakups, two sacks, and one interception. Notably, Woods was selected to represent his college in the East-West Shrine Bowl following his senior year.
Falcons’ Defensive Strategy
Woods will fill the spot on the practice squad vacated by Ronnie Harrison, who was elevated to the active roster due to the injury of D’Vine Deablo. With Woods joining the ranks, the Falcons now have three cornerbacks on their roster, along with rookie Cobee Bryant and Keith Taylor. As the team prepares for their road trip to face the surging Patriots, bolstering their secondary will be crucial in their quest to break a two-game losing streak.
Upcoming Showdown with the Patriots
The Falcons are set to face the New England Patriots at Gillette Stadium, with kickoff scheduled for 1 p.m. This matchup is pivotal for Atlanta, who currently sits at 3-4 and is eager to regain momentum after a challenging stretch. The Patriots, boasting a five-game winning streak and favored by -5.5 points, present a formidable challenge, having won their last two games by an average margin of 18.5 points.
As the Falcons aim to reset their season, the addition of A.J. Woods could prove to be a significant step in fortifying their defense against one of the league’s in-form teams.
