Atlanta Falcons navigate quarterback uncertainty as Kirk Cousins’ $57.5M cap hit looms

The Atlanta Falcons are entering a challenging offseason as they prepare for the 2026 season, particularly in the quarterback department. With Michael Penix Jr.’s recovery timeline remaining uncertain, the Falcons are expected to seek a quarterback capable of taking snaps through the summer and possibly into the regular season.

Kirk Cousins’ hefty cap hit

Kirk Cousins is currently under contract with the Falcons for the 2026 and 2027 seasons, but he carries a staggering $57.5 million cap hit for each of those years. This financial burden has put the franchise in a precarious position, compelling them to evaluate their options well before Cousins’ $10 million roster bonus is due on the fifth league day of the upcoming season.

In his recent performance, Cousins has demonstrated his capabilities, finishing with a 3-3 record as a starter over the last six games. He averaged 194.2 passing yards per game, tossing eight touchdowns against four interceptions. Despite a particularly poor outing against the Seattle Seahawks, Cousins has completed over 60% of his passes in five of those starts.

Coaching and front office dynamics

Falcons head coach Raheem Morris hinted at the uncertainty surrounding Cousins’ future, stating, “Everything’s on the table,” regarding the possibility of him starting in Week 1 of 2026. The decision will ultimately hinge on several factors, including the composition of the coaching staff and the front office’s vision for the upcoming season.

If Morris and general manager Terry Fontenot remain in their roles, they may lean towards retaining Cousins in an effort to win immediately. Conversely, if a new regime takes the reins, a shift in strategy could lead to a different direction entirely.

Exploring free agency options

Should the Falcons choose to explore free agency in their quest for a quarterback, several potential candidates could find themselves available.

PENDING FREE AGENTS FOR FALCONS IN 2026

Easton Stick: Currently serving as the backup quarterback for the Falcons, Stick remains a viable option, despite not having seen significant game action. His familiarity with the team could make him an attractive choice if the Falcons decide to keep it in-house.

As the Falcons confront this pivotal moment in their franchise’s trajectory, every move they make will be scrutinized. The decision on Cousins and the potential additions through free agency will play a crucial role in shaping the team’s future as they attempt to find stability at the quarterback position.
