Arizona Cardinals shake up roster ahead of Rams clash
The Arizona Cardinals made notable roster adjustments ahead of their Week 14 matchup against the Los Angeles Rams. The team announced several key moves that include the addition of running back Corey Kiner and linebacker Eku Leota, as well as the release of Jermar Jefferson, Montrell Johnson Jr., and Sincere McCormick.
Roster Changes Overview
The Cardinals signed Kiner from the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad and added Leota to their own practice squad. Meanwhile, they opted to part ways with Jefferson, Johnson Jr., and McCormick, reflecting a shift in strategy as they approach the final stretch of the season.
Corey Kiner Joins the Backfield
Kiner, standing at 5-foot-9 and weighing 209 pounds, has been part of the Vikings’ practice squad since September 23. He entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie free agent with the San Francisco 49ers after a standout collegiate career at the University of Cincinnati. Over three seasons there, Kiner accumulated impressive stats, rushing for 2,882 yards and scoring 16 touchdowns on 556 carries. Last season, he played a pivotal role for the Bearcats, starting all 12 games and recording 1,153 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
Eku Leota Strengthens the Defense
Leota, measuring 6-foot-4 and 257 pounds, has previously appeared in three games this season with the New Orleans Saints after being elevated from their practice squad. His NFL journey began in 2023 with the Carolina Panthers as an undrafted rookie free agent from Auburn. In his career, Leota has participated in 14 games, including one start, and has compiled eight tackles, one sack, three tackles for loss, and two quarterback hits. He brings valuable depth to the Cardinals’ defense as they strive to improve their performance.
Challenges Ahead for the Cardinals
With a current record of 3-9, the Cardinals have endured a challenging season, suffering seven losses by a single score. Head coach Jonathan Gannon addressed the pressing need for improvement, acknowledging the difficulties his team faces. “We know how to compete, but we don’t know how to win. That falls on me,” Gannon remarked. He emphasized the importance of moving forward, stating, “The past is the past; you are what your record is.”
Gannon is aware that every team faces adversity, and he remains optimistic about the potential for growth amid challenges. “If you’re in this league and you’re in competitive situations, you’re going to go through adversity. We’re in it, and you just try to keep digging out and know that you will come out the other side better. I do believe that.”
As the Cardinals prepare to face the Rams, these roster changes may be pivotal in their quest to finish the season on a high note.
