Andres Borregales channels Phil Collins for Patriots’ revival
In Foxborough, Massachusetts, New England Patriots kicker Andres Borregales is stepping into the spotlight during what many see as a pivotal season for the franchise. If you told him he would play a significant role in the team’s resurgence during his rookie year, he might respond with a line from the iconic Phil Collins: “I’ve been waiting for this moment for all my life … Oh Lorrrrd.”
This lyrical nod not only highlights Borregales’ musical preferences but also hints at his excitement for the opportunity ahead. When asked about his pre-game rituals, he shared that he has a go-to playlist of four songs, including Collins’ 1981 classic “In the Air Tonight.”
Pre-game rituals and superstitions
Borregales explained his routine to WEEI, saying, “For me, I listen to the same four songs before the game. I try to keep it personal, but if you hear, ‘In the Air Tonight,’ just know, that’s probably me.”
In addition to his musical choices, Borregales adheres to another superstition—his cleats. “I try to wear the same cleats because I switched cleats, and I missed one,” he noted. “I went back to the red cleats.” This commitment to consistency speaks to the mental focus required of a kicker, where every detail can impact performance.
An unexpected choice of inspiration
While it’s not uncommon for kickers to have their own superstitions, Borregales’ choice of a song that features a dramatic gated reverb drum solo might seem atypical. The song, released over two decades before Borregales was born, is known for its intensity, contrasting with the calm demeanor often expected from someone in his position.
Despite any unconventional elements in his approach, Borregales has proven his mettle on the field this season. Through 13 games, the Venezuelan native has successfully converted 23 of his 26 field goal attempts and made 36 out of 38 extra points. His performance has sparked conversations about his potential to become the next great kicker for the Patriots, as the franchise looks to rebuild and regain its competitive edge.
