Amon-Ra St. Brown addresses Lions’ offensive struggles

Detroit Lions wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown is no stranger to the spotlight. Since entering the league, he has been a consistent performer, showcasing his skills and reliability game after game. However, this season has presented a different narrative for the Lions’ offense, one that St. Brown recently addressed following practice.

A season of inconsistency

St. Brown, reflecting on the challenges faced by the Lions, expressed his frustration with the offensive flow—or lack thereof—that has characterized their season. Under the guidance of first-year offensive coordinator John Morton, the team has struggled to find its rhythm.

“There’s been a few games where we had a flow, like against the Bears and Ravens,” St. Brown noted. “But for the most part, I feel like we haven’t been in a flow all year.” The All-Pro receiver emphasized that the issue isn’t about assigning blame; rather, it’s about collective execution and cohesion. “I think for us, as an offense, the word that sticks out to me is ‘flawed,’” he added.

Despite the difficulties, St. Brown remains optimistic. He sees the effort being put in during practices and believes the team can recapture its offensive prowess. “When we get that back, we’ll be just fine,” he stated confidently.

Communication and execution are key

For St. Brown, the path forward is clear. He highlighted the need for improved communication and execution during drives, irrespective of their duration. “It’s just communication, execution,” he said. “As long as we’re on track, taking care of the football, and focusing on the details and fundamentals, I think we’re a pretty good offense.” With playmakers at every position, he is convinced that finding that elusive flow will reignite the Lions’ scoring capabilities.

Offensive coordinator reflects on challenges

Earlier in the week, Morton also weighed in on the challenges the offense has faced. He pinpointed execution as the primary issue, particularly in their recent loss to the Minnesota Vikings. “Winning our one-on-one matchups was big,” Morton said, acknowledging that failing to do so led to unfavorable situations on the field. The coordinator is aware of the criticism and is committed to making adjustments in future game plans.

“The protection was the biggest thing,” he explained. “When we did things right, we did really well. But when we struggled, it set us back into second-and-long and third-and-long situations.” His insights reveal a clear understanding of the obstacles they must overcome to improve.

Jared Goff shares his perspective

Lions quarterback Jared Goff echoed St. Brown’s sentiments. Drawing an analogy to basketball, he compared the team’s offensive struggles to a player losing their shooting form. “It’s kind of like the fundamentals,” Goff noted. “We are getting explosive at times, but it’s the fundamentals of some of the middle-of-the-road stuff that has been lacking.”

While the challenges may seem overwhelming, Goff remains resolute. He believes that improvement comes from each player executing their responsibilities effectively. “There are ebbs and flows to a season,” he remarked. “A few weeks ago, we were praised, and now we’re considered a horrible offense. It’s about facing adversity and pushing through.”

Goff’s perspective emphasizes a commitment to improvement, acknowledging that the team is aware of its shortcomings and actively working to address them. “We know what we need to fix,” he stated confidently.

As the Lions navigate their offensive struggles, the collective belief in their ability to turn things around remains strong. With key players like St. Brown and Goff committed to the process, the hope is that their efforts will soon translate into a cohesive and effective offensive performance.
