Alim McNeill on the Brink of Return to Lions’ Defense

Alim McNeill is making significant strides toward returning to the Detroit Lions’ lineup after a lengthy recovery from a torn ACL. Since suffering the injury last December, McNeill has been diligently working his way back to full health. General manager Brad Holmes noted in August that the defensive tackle was ahead of his rehabilitation schedule, fueling optimism among Lions fans.

Positive Update from the Coaching Staff

On Monday, head coach Dan Campbell shared an encouraging update regarding McNeill’s status. He indicated that the Lions are poised to open the 21-day practice window for their standout defender this week.

“We’re close on Mac,” Campbell stated during his press conference. “There’s a good chance we may start Mac’s clock this week. That’s good. We’re just — we want to make sure we check all those boxes before we say that’s what we’re going to do for sure. But it’s trending the right way. Mac’s — he’s about ready to go, and I think he’s tired of training.”

McNeill has been on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list since the offseason, and with his mandatory four-week stay concluding, he is now eligible for a return. However, the Lions are expected to be cautious. They will likely designate him for return first, giving them 21 days to activate him. It’s probable that Detroit will utilize most, if not all, of that window, which could delay his return until Week 7.

Impact on the Lions’ Defense

When McNeill does return, his presence will be a significant asset to a Lions defense that is already ranked among the top 10 units in the league against the run. Additionally, he will enhance the team’s pass-rush capabilities, having recorded 8.5 sacks in just 27 games over the past two seasons. His return could make a noticeable difference as the Lions aim to solidify their defensive front.

As the anticipation builds, the Lions and their fans are eager to see McNeill back on the field, ready to contribute to a team that has shown promising potential this season.
