49ers rookies shine and struggle as Williams and Stout step up while others face growing pains in early NFL tests

Rookies on the Rise and Facing Challenges for the 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers have made a strong impression early in the NFL season, starting with two consecutive victories on the road. However, while the established veterans on the team shine, there’s a group of rookies who are navigating the complexities of professional football, showing both promise and challenges. As the team continues to find its footing, it’s essential to assess how these young players have fared in their initial outings.

The Bright Spots

Mykel Williams | Defensive Tackle

Mykel Williams has quickly established himself as a formidable force on the defensive line. In his debut, he didn’t make a significant impact on the stat sheet, but he effectively fulfilled his responsibilities without compromising the defense. Fast forward to his second game, and Williams showcased his growth by tallying four run stops, two tackles for loss, and three quarterback pressures. His contributions have been pivotal in helping the 49ers maintain an impressive 3.7 yards per carry allowed, placing them among the league’s elite in run defense.

Alfred Collins | Defensive Tackle

After a rocky start in Week 1, where he struggled in limited snaps, Alfred Collins rebounded impressively in his second game. Initially overwhelmed and contributing minimally, Collins saw increased playing time, logging 24 snaps and recording two tackles and a quarterback hit. While he still faces challenges against stronger opponents, his potential is evident, and he is likely to take on a more significant role soon, especially with current starter Kalia Davis underperforming.

Upton Stout | Nickelback

Upton Stout’s journey has been a roller coaster. In his first outing, he was lost in the shuffle, yielding three catches on five targets and committing a penalty. However, he flipped the narrative in Week 2, emerging as a key player with four solo tackles, a sack, and three quarterback pressures over 56 snaps. Despite some ongoing struggles in coverage, including a penalty and allowing a catch, his overall performance indicates a steep upward trajectory.

Connor Colby | Guard

Connor Colby stood out as the only rookie on offense to see action, stepping in after an injury to starting left guard Ben Bartch. In his 36 snaps, Colby showcased his potential by allowing no pressures, a remarkable feat for a seventh-round draft pick. His experience as a zone run blocker from college has translated well, and while he will need to build strength to handle defensive tackles more effectively, he fits seamlessly into the 49ers’ offensive scheme.

The Growing Pains

Nick Martin | Linebacker

Nick Martin has yet to see the field this season, remaining inactive for two consecutive games. The coaching staff’s decision to bypass him for special teams in favor of Ji’Ayir Brown suggests that Martin has not yet earned their trust. While he possesses untapped potential, the emergence of Dee Winters alongside Fred Warner makes it clear that the 49ers are willing to be patient with Martin’s development.

CJ West | Defensive Tackle

CJ West has had a quiet start to his NFL career, with just 20 snaps and no recorded tackles thus far. Despite a standout training camp performance, he has struggled against starting-level competition, leaving his current contributions wanting. His progress will be closely monitored as the season unfolds.

Jordan Watkins | Wide Receiver

Another rookie yet to make an impact is Jordan Watkins, who has been inactive due to a high-ankle sprain sustained during preseason. The coaching staff appears inclined to rely on more experienced veterans, but as Watkins adapts to Kyle Shanahan’s complex system, he may eventually carve out a role.

Jordan James | Running Back

Jordan James is in a similar position as Watkins, facing inactivity due to injury concerns. With Christian McCaffrey and Brian Robinson Jr. healthy, the 49ers have limited opportunities for James. However, as the team struggles with a 3.2 yards-per-carry average, there’s a growing need for a spark from the backfield.

Marques Sigle | Safety

Despite starting in consecutive games, Marques Sigle has had his share of ups and downs. While he has demonstrated strong tackling skills and range, he has also struggled in coverage, notably allowing a touchdown to Juwan Johnson. As he continues to grow, Sigle’s ability to contend with larger tight ends will be crucial for his development.

As the 49ers navigate the early stages of the season, the blend of emerging talents and those facing hurdles paints a complex picture of the team’s future. Each rookie’s journey offers a glimpse into the evolving landscape of a team striving for success in the competitive NFL environment.
