Raptors Rise in Power Rankings After Impressive Road Performance
The Toronto Raptors are experiencing a surge in momentum, coming off a successful 4-1 road trip that has elevated their standing in the league. NBA.com’s John Schuhmann has taken notice, moving the Raptors up to No. 12 in his latest power rankings, a notable four spots higher than the previous week.
“The Raptors have won seven of their last eight games and are 2-0 in Cleveland after clinching a rest-advantage victory there, showcasing their best offensive performance of the season on Thursday,” Schuhmann noted. This victory not only solidified their position but also set the stage for a promising continuation of the season. With an 8-5 start, the Raptors face a favorable schedule ahead, as five of their next seven games will be against teams currently struggling in the Eastern Conference, including the Hornets, Wizards, Nets, and Pacers.
Upcoming Challenges and Previous Successes
Despite their recent upswing, the Raptors’ only loss during this impressive stretch came against the Philadelphia 76ers, a team they will face again this Wednesday. This game will be crucial as Toronto looks to solidify their position in the playoff race while building on their current success.
Schuhmann’s power rankings place the Raptors behind notable teams such as the Minnesota Timberwolves, Milwaukee Bucks, and Golden State Warriors. Yet, the Raptors have shown resilience, overcoming certain weaknesses with their strengths.
Strengths and Weaknesses
One area of concern has been the Raptors’ slow starts. They have found themselves trailing by at least nine points in the first quarter during three games last week, including matchups against the Nets and Pacers. Overall, their starting lineup has struggled, being outscored by 1.3 points per 100 possessions, which ranks among the worst in the league for lineups that have played significant minutes. They have allowed a staggering 121 points on just 92 first-quarter possessions, translating to an alarming 132 points per 100 possessions in that time.
However, the Raptors are buoyed by the strength of their bench, which is currently ranked second in the league. Players like Sandro Mamukelashvili and Jamal Shead have contributed significantly, providing valuable minutes and maintaining the team’s competitive edge. The Raptors have faced challenges when both Brandon Ingram and Scottie Barnes are on the court together, being outscored in 282 minutes. But when one is on the floor without the other, they have notably outperformed, boasting a plus-15 per 100 in 289 minutes. The defense, particularly without Ingram, has also been impressive, allowing just 96.7 points per 100 possessions in 140 minutes with Barnes leading the way.
Key Players Making an Impact
Point guard Immanuel Quickley has emerged as a key contributor, scoring 20 points or more in each of the last three games. After a rocky start to the season that raised concerns, Quickley’s resurgence has been vital to the Raptors’ current positioning in the standings.
As the Raptors gear up for a busy week ahead, including games against the Charlotte Hornets, Philadelphia 76ers, Washington Wizards, and Brooklyn Nets, the focus will be on maintaining their momentum and addressing their early-game challenges. With the playoffs on the horizon, every game is critical for a team looking to solidify its identity and position in the Eastern Conference.
