Timberwolves soar in the fourth quarter, shock Spurs with a three-point barrage
The Minnesota Timberwolves found their rhythm just in time for a dramatic victory, securing their second win against a team with a winning record in under 24 hours. Following a hard-fought battle, they triumphed over the San Antonio Spurs with a score of 125-112 at home on Sunday night.
Fourth Quarter Explosion
For much of the game, Minnesota struggled to establish a lead, hovering just two points ahead until the final frame. However, the fourth quarter marked a turning point as the Timberwolves unleashed a shooting display that stunned their opponents. They outscored the Spurs 36-19, largely thanks to a relentless barrage of three-pointers.
Donte DiVincenzo emerged as a key contributor, nailing three of his four three-pointers during this explosive quarter and finishing the game with 18 points, 13 of which came in the final moments. Anthony Edwards, showcasing his scoring prowess, led the Wolves with an impressive 32 points on 13 of 18 shooting, marking his fifth consecutive game scoring at least 30 points.
Randle’s All-Around Impact
Julius Randle played a pivotal role as well, contributing significantly across the board with 22 points, 12 assists, and six rebounds. The Timberwolves’ performance surged with Randle on the floor, as they outscored the Spurs by 30 points during his 36 minutes of play. His playmaking ability and offensive presence were essential in creating opportunities for his teammates.
Three-Point Proficiency
The Timberwolves’ perimeter shooting was a highlight of the night, as they collectively sank 17 of 37 attempts from beyond the arc. Alongside DiVincenzo and Edwards, Naz Reid added three triples, while both Randle and Jaylen Clark chipped in with two each. This sharp shooting not only secured the win but also underscored Minnesota’s potential as a formidable threat in the Western Conference.
Climbing the Standings
Before this weekend, the Timberwolves had struggled against teams with winning records, going 0-7. However, with these back-to-back wins, they improved their overall record to 12-8, placing them sixth in the Western Conference standings. They now trail the fifth-place Spurs (13-6) by just 1.5 games and are only three games behind the second-place Lakers (14-4).
Upcoming Challenges
Looking ahead, Minnesota will face the New Orleans Pelicans on Tuesday and Thursday nights, followed by a home game against the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday. With both the Pelicans (3-17) and Clippers (5-15) struggling, this presents a prime opportunity for the Timberwolves to extend their winning streak to five games and solidify their position in the playoff race.
