Stephon Castle Takes a Major Step in Sports Ownership
Stephon Castle, a name synonymous with emerging talent in the NBA, has taken a significant leap off the court. In a move that caught many by surprise, the San Antonio Spurs guard has joined the Connecticut Sports Group (CTSG) as a co-owner of CT United FC, the state’s professional men’s soccer team set to debut in MLS NEXT Pro in 2026. Alongside this venture, CTSG is also launching a women’s team that will compete in WPSL Pro starting in 2028.
A New Era for Connecticut Soccer
On Thursday morning, CTSG unveiled an expanded ownership group that includes prominent figures such as Michael Salguero, CEO of ButcherBox; Calvin L. Butts Jr., co-founder of East Chop Capital; and Johan Bjurström, a global private equity investor. They are joined by Shiva Sarram and Drew Pearson, as well as CTSG’s managing partners, André and Michelle Swanston. The group’s ambitious plans center around not just launching CT United FC and a women’s team, but also developing a waterfront district in Bridgeport, Connecticut. This district will feature a soccer-specific stadium, housing, hotel accommodations, retail spaces, and green areas.
“This is an exciting moment not just for Connecticut soccer, but for our state as a whole,” André Swanston expressed. “Michelle and I are proud to welcome such a dynamic group of investors who share our belief that sport can be both a force for excellence and a catalyst for transformation.”
Castle’s Journey to the Spurs
Stephon Castle’s path to this new role has been marked by impressive milestones. Now in his second season with the Spurs, Castle made waves during his time at the University of Connecticut, where he was instrumental in clinching the national championship under head coach Dan Hurley in 2024. Selected as the fourth overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft, Castle averaged 11.1 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.9 assists during his rookie season, quickly establishing himself as a key player.
“He impacted winning,” Hurley remarked about Castle. “In a variety of ways: His defense, his ability to create off the dribble, improved shooting … he plays hard as s***.”
Rising Star and Versatile Player
Castle’s accolades continued to grow when he was named the NBA’s Rookie of the Year, following in the footsteps of the highly-touted Victor Wembanyama. His versatility on the court has earned him respect from both teammates and coaches alike. “Steph has proven, in three years, everything,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson noted. “In high school, he was an All-American who was the main creator … then he goes to UConn and plays every position but (that). Then he arrived here, and played every single role.”
From point guard to shooting guard and small forward, Castle’s adaptability has become one of his defining traits. Whether facilitating plays or driving to the basket, he has established himself as a formidable force in the NBA.
A Commitment to Community and Development
Now, at just 21 years old, Castle is expanding his impact beyond the hardwood. “Playing basketball at UConn showed me the incredible talent and passion for sports here,” he stated regarding his new role with CTSG. “My family and I are proud to invest in CTSG and help build elite clubs that inspire young athletes, energize fans, and create lasting pride across the state.”
As Connecticut gears up for this new chapter in its sports landscape, Castle’s involvement promises to blend his passion for basketball with a commitment to elevating soccer in the region. The stage is set for a transformative era, both for Castle and for the fans who will witness the unfolding of this ambitious vision.
