Sacramento Kings shockingly bench Dennis Schröder for Russell Westbrook as Knicks eye backup guard options

Date:

Sacramento Kings Make Surprising Lineup Change

The Sacramento Kings had a quiet offseason, with few roster changes. However, the addition of Dennis Schröder was a highlight for the franchise. Executives like Scott Perry touted Schröder as a top target, and Doug Christie praised his abilities during training camp.

Yet, just 12 games into the season, the Kings made a startling move by inserting Russell Westbrook into the starting lineup in place of Schröder. This decision appears to be a long-term strategy, as Westbrook has found success in his new role.

Schröder’s Struggles and Bench Performance

Statistically, Schröder has had a mixed bag this season. He is currently averaging 12.4 points, 6.0 assists, and 3.7 rebounds, but his shooting efficiency tells a different story. With a field goal percentage of 39.6% and a three-point shooting mark of 33.3%, the 13-year veteran’s performance has been underwhelming.

Interestingly, Schröder has thrived in a bench role, where he’s averaging 14.5 points on an improved 42.3% shooting from the field and 38.7% from beyond the arc. This change in performance raises questions about his fit in the starting lineup and whether he could be more beneficial coming off the bench.

Knicks Eyeing Backup Guard Options

As Schröder’s situation unfolds, another team is reportedly exploring options for a backup guard. The New York Knicks are actively seeking to bolster their roster and have shown interest in players like Jose Alvarado from the New Orleans Pelicans and Donte DiVincenzo from the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Sources indicate that the Knicks have engaged in discussions with two Western Conference teams regarding potential trades, signaling their intent to strengthen their guard depth. As the season progresses, the landscape of the league continues to shift, with teams like the Kings and Knicks navigating their unique challenges.
