Sacramento Kings’ Devin Carter benched again: fans demand answers from coach amid shocking rookie snub

Devin Carter’s Diminished Role Stirs Discontent Among Kings Fans

In 2024, the Sacramento Kings made a significant move by selecting Devin Carter with the 13th overall pick in the NBA Draft, a decision that echoed their aspirations for a bright future. Carter, a standout from Providence, had earned accolades as the Big East Player of the Year, showcasing his dynamic skillset with averages of 19.7 points, 8.7 rebounds, and nearly three steals per game during his collegiate career.

A Rocky Start to His Professional Journey

However, the early stages of Carter’s professional journey have been marred by setbacks. After undergoing shoulder surgery, he was forced to sit out his entire rookie season. When he finally took the court, his performance was underwhelming: he averaged just 3.8 points and over two rebounds per game, shooting 37% from the field and a disappointing 29.5% from beyond the arc. Despite these struggles, flashes of potential had fans optimistic heading into this season.

The Confounding Benchings

Yet, the current season has been anything but smooth for Carter. Out of the 22 games played thus far, he has participated in only eight, including an alarming stretch of eight consecutive games without seeing any action. Meanwhile, rookie Nique Clifford has steadily cemented his role on the roster, playing in every game since his return from an injury in October.

This situation has left fans questioning the coaching staff’s strategy. The Kings, who are currently grappling with their own struggles, are facing mounting criticism as Carter remains sidelined. One frustrated fan expressed, “A first-round pick from a year ago getting zero minutes on one of the worst teams in the league is malpractice. Someone needs to ask Doug what is the deal.”

The Fans’ Frustration

Carter’s lack of playing time has ignited a firestorm of debate among Kings supporters. Many believe that the organization must reassess its handling of the young talent, particularly as the team continues to struggle on the court. In what should be a developmental year for Carter, his absence from the lineup raises crucial questions about the team’s direction and decision-making.

As the Kings navigate this turbulent season, the spotlight is on Coach Doug as fans eagerly await clarity on Carter’s role and future with the team. The hope is that the Kings will find a way to harness the potential of their promising rookie, allowing him to contribute meaningfully as the season unfolds.
