Ryan Kalkbrenner stuns NBA skeptics, exceeds Hornets expectations but questions about long-term fit remain

Ryan Kalkbrenner defies skepticism, surpasses Hornets’ expectations, but long-term fit remains uncertain

The center position has long been a source of frustration for the Charlotte Hornets, a narrative that extends back further than many fans might care to remember. A few seasons ago, the franchise pinned its hopes on Mark Williams as the answer to this enduring dilemma. However, injuries and defensive struggles led to his trade, first to the Lakers and then to the Phoenix Suns, leaving the Hornets searching once again for a solution.

When Charlotte selected Ryan Kalkbrenner in the second round of this year’s draft, excitement rippled through the organization and its supporters. Kalkbrenner, a four-time Big East Defensive Player of the Year, showcased an impressive offensive repertoire, averaging nearly 20 points per game during his senior year at Creighton. Yet, lingering questions about his ability to withstand the NBA’s physicality as a rookie remained.

Early Impressions and Performance

So far, Kalkbrenner has had his moments. At times, he has proven capable of holding his own against more robust opponents, while on other occasions, he has struggled as opposing big men powered through him. His athleticism, or lack thereof, has not helped him mitigate these challenges. Nevertheless, he has performed admirably, exceeding virtually every preseason expectation.

In 24 games, Kalkbrenner is averaging 8.9 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game—an impressive stat line for a player many doubted would spend significant time in Charlotte this season. However, the pressing question remains: is he the long-term answer at center for the Hornets?

Defensive Concerns and Future Potential

While it is important to manage expectations for a rookie, particularly one who is nearly 24 years old, Kalkbrenner’s defensive performance is a concern. Initially heralded for his defensive prowess, he currently ranks 80th among NBA big men in defensive rating at 117.5. This statistic raises eyebrows when considering the Hornets’ future aspirations.

For Charlotte to take the next step toward contention, they need a player who can effectively stretch the floor with three-point shooting while also serving as a genuine protector in the paint. Although Kalkbrenner demonstrated some shooting ability during his collegiate career, he has yet to attempt a three-pointer this season, leading to uncertainty about whether this aspect of his game will develop in the NBA.

Assessing Kalkbrenner’s Role

Ideally, on a contending team, Kalkbrenner would serve as a solid No. 2 option. However, to elevate the Hornets to a higher level, his role will need to evolve significantly. As the team navigates its future, the lingering question remains whether Kalkbrenner can develop into the type of player who fulfills these crucial requirements.

With ongoing conversations about the team’s structure and leadership, including speculation surrounding star player LaMelo Ball, the Hornets are at a crossroads. They must decide how best to support their emerging talent like Kalkbrenner while addressing the broader issues that have plagued the franchise for years. The coming months will be pivotal in determining whether Kalkbrenner can solidify his position within the team and contribute to a brighter future for the Hornets.
